Hi. My 1992 240sx base had been idling pretty bad over the past few months. It occurs especially when holding down the brake or when coming to a stop with the clutch in. It idled at 750 before. Today I cleaned the throttle body with carb. cleaner. I also rinsed the intake tube, but then let it dry. I put everything back together and rechecked everything five times. I started it up at the idle was at ~1400 rpms. I found the guide for adjusting idle speed and followed the instructions. It went down to 1000, so I repeated the steps. But when I tried to turn the screw, it would not budge. What do I do? The idle is now consistently at 900 rpms, but it is too high. I know I tightened everything and made sure everything was secure. Please help.

Hey. Thank you for your reply. It is not not so much about the idle. It is the fact that the adjust screw will not go in any further.

make sure the throttle plate is closed completely when it's idling. all the air is supposed to go around the throttle via the IACV.

How do you know if the throttle plate is completely closed when idling?

take the intake tube off and look at it. there are two adjustment screws, one for the closed position and one for open.

or you could back the screw out until there is space between the screw and the ear on the throttle shaft, then screw it back in until it touches. i wouldn't suggest this one because the plate might get stuck on the housing of the throttle body and stick closed. not permenantly, just so you can feel it through the gas pedal. my old car did that. it was annoying and made it harder to take off smoothly.

also, there's no reason to bump the thread that quickly. i was asleep and so was most everybody else.

I am sorry. I am in New York and posted when it was 10 am here. Regarding the intake, do you suggest or not suggest to make any adjustments? I wasn't sure what you were referring to. Also, I had not changed any of the settings. What would cause the plate to not close all the way if I had not touched it in the beginning?

definitely adjust it, it's easy and effective. it could be out of adjustment (i don't know how, it just does) or dirty.
