As the thread says, my idle for the last week or two has been absolutely horrible. When I first start the car in cold weather it goes up to 1500 and stays there, occasionally dropping to 1000 for some reason and then instantly popping back up to 1500.. once the car is warm it idles fine, EXCEPT when the motor is fine and I turn it off, and then I let the engine sit for 2 minutes at start it up again.. what happens is the idle climbs up slowly to 1800 and then drops instantly to 1500 and then starts going VRM.. VRM... VRM...VRM.... shooting up to 1800, and then falling back to 1500 and repeating over and over, and the frequency of it gets slower and slower until it finally stops... what the hell is wrong with my car?

Any help for this poor sap would be appreciated guys

Check for codes, and looks like MAF problems.

Don't clean the MAF. If its broken you need a replacement.

Check for codes.

I heard on S13's (by looking at your profile looks like you have one) that removing the AIV system usually solves a majority of idle problems like this. You could try this:

Hope you fix the problem!

errrr...i thought that was pretty much normal?well the first part of it anyways. when mines cold it will idle anywhere from 1g to 1500....after the thermostat rises, it drops down to about 800 or so.on occasion it will drop to like 600 and almost die when i try to go. do you think mines ****ed up or is that pretty much normal for winter months?

When a car is cold and you start it, the idle should be high. But, then it should slowly drop down. He said his drops down, then shoots back up etc.

yeah and it does it fast, like bounces up and down between even 1200-1800 maybe once a second like someone was literally revving the motor.... Ive never come across something like this.. I hope S3 is right that its just the MAF but I dunno

Right now im more concerned with fixing my blower motor... my other thread isnt getting much attention, any of you guys know where the blower is and how I can take it out?

btw, I removed my AIV system a while back, the problem got no better/worse from it, although I did notice better throttle response O.o

Anyone know how much a MAFS costs?

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....26039 check & mebbe clean 'em out... check vacuum hoses as well; i had a broken hose to the BPT valve when i was replacing injectors... check the throttle body intake boot for rips...

that's all i can think of...

Yeah its gotta be something small like vacuum hoses or Intake MAF or something. My car when its cold never drops at all its crazy. But when its warm outside and I start it it drops down to like 300 after about 3 seconds at 1000 then zooms back up to 700 wierd. My AIV isnt out either.

OH and if you want to check your vacuum hoses do what the masters told me to do take them out and blow on them. hahahah man I will always cherish that one.

Probably wouldnt be the MAFS because as you said, once its warm then its all gravy.

Not sure beyond that but I would rule out the MAFS with 95% certainty.

just in case it is the MAFS, from the dealer here in NC its 530 bucks, thats including tax, i just replaced mine :( although it is nice and shiney now :D ooo and i had close to the same problems your having, with idle jumping and dropping, so far this has fixed it, when ur idle starts dropping really low to the point of dying, or jumping up high, pop the hood, get out and beat on the maf, if it returns to normal, then good chance thats whats wrong  thats how i found out :D
