It is not bad to drive car pass the quarter tank. It is bad to drive car on an almost empty tank.. The gas in the tank doubles as cooling. Engineers have taken this into accounting when designing fuel pumps.. You will have problems with dirty gas and failure to replace fuel filters more than you will actually have issues with the pump running below quarter tank...
Check the crank angle sensor...this is what gives timing info to the engine's computer. You can clean this in certain cases.. it is a slit round plate with a laser pulse shining through. I have seen dirt on the plates that can cloud reading. I know this is a procedure that can be done on maxima's..don't know about the J30..it could be a hermetically sealed unit..nevertheless, worth a shot.
Check the IDLE circuitry. The IAA-AAC unit is a notorious culprit on the VE30DE model engine found on the 300zx along with your J30. Check this link:
http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnettech/iaa/iaa.html The one thing that he does not mention is the attempt to clean it of soot which it can be done. Or, you can be drastic and replace it..
Check the Fuel injectors..do a leakdown test and power balance test..your mechanic should know this. These injectors are plain garbage.. The late 90's saw a remodel that fixed the original quality issues.
Check the mass airflow sensor..especially the grounding.. This is also a known problem...Check all grounding points while you are at it..Besides the above..check the PCV valve.and the charcoal canister... Don't overlook vacuum leaks..they can lead to stalling..
Has this car ever run properly after all the work was done ? post back with updates..
