Car: 1981 Datsun king cab pickup

Post

First post. Ive been reading and reading and finally feel like I need to ask some questions.

I have a 1981 Datsun pickup. When its running, like throttling and driving down the road, it runs fine, but I can not get it to idle properly. I can adjust the throttle and get it to "rumble" around 1100rpm, but it doesn't sound happy. I spent like an hour and a half with this motorcycle mechanic in montana trying to figure it out and he suggested that I replace the carb with a weber and also just cancel out all the emissions/vacuum lines. Now i'd like to try plugging those lines before I replace the carb, but I'm not totally sure what that does. Also when it comes to carb replacement, I found warrantied carbs on guaranteed carburetors dot com and was wondering if replacing it with a new stock carb and block the vacuum lines would make it run better or just go with a weber and cancel them out. Any advice or pointing in the right direction for advice will be greatly appreciated. I'm totally stumped on why it gargles at idle, everything else is in standing running order. thanks!

Welcome, wish I could help you, but I don't understand all that stuff either.
I have one with a Weber on it, one has to keep in mind that these engines are smog engines, they run best when stock.
First thing I would do is make sure all your wires are connected correctly to the carb, I believe that those carbs have an anti-run on solenoid(stops dieseling and back firing), if that is not connected or functioning properly, it will likely not idle at all at normal idle speeds.
One must read the first line on this post again, I don't know much about the napZ engines, I have one, but my LZ23 I built with dual SUs will kick that Z24s a** every day of the week, and on the weekends too, and as I mentioned, my Z24 has a Weber, but maybe it's not tuned/jetted correctly.

My post was automatically edited for a bad word. :nono:  :lolling: :lolling: :lolling:

Hey waynosworld, thanks for the reply. Ended up ordering a remanufactured carb with stock settings last night so I hope that fixes the problem(s). Also do you have any advice or links to some info on blocking the vacuum lines?

It looks like the guy that put the Weber on the engine I have left all the lines intact, so only one vacuum line must have went to the carb(vac adv), when I put the 521 cab on the frame, I left everything how it was, the only things that don't go anywhere are the wires that went to the carb, they don't go anywhere now except for the choke wire, it is connected.
I don't know what all them lines do myself, but the truck doesn't have any weird smells, so I don't care, it's for sale anyway, I don't need this truck on my property, don't know why I built it anymore.
