An african american co-worker of mine said to me today "man, they legaliz'n gay marriages in Maryland, man! Thats bulls**t, man." I pointed to the back of his hand and said "Are you serious? Your black. How many died so that you have the rights of every other american? It was not that long ago that This country did NOT recognize the legallity of "Colored" marriages. Would you like them to give all minoritys equality, or take away all minority rights?" He shut up after that. But it just goes to show you how narrow minded people are.

I don't see the parallel actually. I know people try to link the two rights struggles, but on the marriage thing, nope; it ain't the same.

 You just made one link all by your self. "The Two Rights Struggles" Dont be "ig'nant" too.

Restricting someones RIGHTS for any PERSONAL choice, that did not harm anyone else or infringe on anyone elses rights, is to go against everything this country was built on.

Dont try and seperate the topic because it is one and the same. What? Just because the Right-Wing Bible Thumpers dont want them to marry? Well shyt man it was not that many generations ago they were Burning "witches" and before that Bunning whole citys of woman and children to the ground in the crusades. You better come up with some better reason not to let them marry then "cuz thur f@gs", or different then you in any way. They are Human, american, law abiding, tax pay'n citizens. Are they terroists? No. Criminals? No. Can you give me ONE good reason to say no to there chance at happiness?

And to be honest, I would have TRADED many of my crappy STRAIT neighbors , for a nice lesbian married couple, any day of the week. :naughty:

You mean the country where white people came from Europe and "discovered" land that people were already living on and stole it? really? Look down at the ground you are standing on; it's soaked with blood. Oppression is very much part of the fabric of America. When did I say restriction? I invite you to show me.Way to spin off into a frothing tirade though.
sndtgr08 wrote:Dont try and seperate the topic because it is one and the same.
I just did because, no, their not. I don't see anybody owning gay people. The economy of a large swath of this country was not in the past built on the labor of an enslaved gay population. I haven't seen any "straights only" bathrooms. There are no "gay only" cemeteries that I am aware of. Gays were never determined to equal 3/5s of a straight person. No amendment was required for gay persons to gain the right to vote, something black persons AND women had to fight for. Gays have not been allowed to die of syphilis while government "researchers" watched. The list goes on.

Well, I'm not a bible thumper. I don't recall advocating the burning of witches nor crusading anywhere so you can shelve that "argument." Similarly, I haven't fired any derogatory comments at them. You did that. I have not questioned their humanity, their adherence to our laws or the status of their tax returns. If they are terrorists or criminals that is the subject for another discussion and I'm sure their choice of sexual partners has zero to do with that. Again, I invite you to show where I advocated for their unhappiness.

Completely irrelevant to the discussion, but amusingly ironic in that you appear to be making some sort of correlation to the sexuality of an individual and their suitability as a neighbor. The bible thumpers you disparage share your fixation on this metric even if they use it to steer in an opposite direction.

I do enjoy your over the top predictable responses, though. It's fun to poke you. :poke:

I love it when people think gay marriage somehow affects their lives in some way.

@themadscientist omg it would just take too much time to get into how far in every direction you get off topic.

The fact is: "A minority is a sociological category within a demographic"

This apply's to the community of gay people living in america. They deserve the same privileges and rights that you do in this day and age, in this country. Try to put aside your prejudices.

And what is this comment? "Gays were never determined to equal 3/5s of a straight person" Thats just messed up. How can you even think like that and be an american? That sounds EXACTLY like something a plantation owner would have said about his slaves, or Hitler would have said about the Jews. Its just out right closed mined. I bet there are gay people better then you in every way, one is smarter one is faster one can swim better one can draw better one can build better or anything. Just cuz he or she is gay does not make them LESS of human, american, or citizen, then you. wow talk about a narrow point of view. Just come out and say it. "I hate gay people" Its the only explanation for being against letting them marry and be happy. Why would you want to stop them from trying to be happy unless you have something personal against them. You never did answer that quiestion.

Can you give me ONE good reason to say no to there chance at happiness. (not a personal reason I.E. "I hate gay people")

to the OP,when TMS wrote 'Gays were never determined to equal 3/5s of a straight person' he said that as a reference that gays are not treated as badly in general as black people,at least that is how i read it.

but i really see no problem with gay marriage,no one is forcing straight people to marry gay people so im not seeing why the big deal.

Haha! :lolling: And there it is. You have proven my long held theory about as quickly as I expected. I call it the "Hitler reflex." It states that the weaknesses of ones ability to argue their sociopolitical ideas is proportional to how quickly they invoke Hitler and or Nazi parallels. Parallels that never really exist.

First, I never deviated from the topic.

Second, I never stated what my interpretation of a minority was so it's wierd you felt the need to define it.

Third, Your complete ignorance of the mention of the 3/5ths compromise is alarming since you would portray yourself as a thinker. Learn some history, you will figure out why that's an important thing, then come back. If you are too lazy ask that guy up there ^ He gets it.

Again, I must remind you and the fact that you still fail to recognize that I have not endorsed their unhappiness is really pathetic. Reading is fundamental friend.

Watching you take a completely off center interpretation of very simple non-ambiguous words and go way over there with great enthusiasm is fun. Thank you for being so entertaining. :dblthumb:

The original point was that one minority thinks another minority should not have the same rights as himself. If you still dont "see the parallel " as you put it, then you never will.

lol, no tapping! My analogy to my coworker was valid. Im sorry you dont see the connection. I did't post it to start an arguement like someone said. My coworker got the point and maybe he will be more considerate/accepting of other peoples differences in the future. I don't know about your "Hitler" theory, I can see connections anywhere someone is oppressed for being different. I'm "Jewish" my self, and can imagine someone telling me I cant do something that everyone else can just because of it. "I can't marry this person I love because I'm a Jew" It's ludacris to me and I would never stand for it. And so I put my self in there shoes. "I can't marry this person that I love because I'm gay" This still sounds ridiculous. It makes me sad, that in 2012 america, this is still going on.

All stupid arguments and hilariousness aside, the 14th amendment guarantees that rights such as marriage can't be limited without due process. Since no one has done anything illegal and the whole case against same-sex marriage is based on opinion rather than law, I can't see what it's all about, except people love to hate gays for some reason.

I have no idea why marriage is a legal thing anyway, it kind of goes against the whole idea of separation of church and state...

@Dattebayo I agree with for the most part, but I was avoiding that specific topic. "separation of church and state" in U.S. is a whooooole topic unto it self with so many over laps of church and state that it could take over a thread. I Dont know if we ever will/can ever fully separate them here. Its been woven in to society from the begining.

I dont think it possible for someone to get elected if they say they dont belive in god. Although belief in made up fairy tales should not be a factor being a good president, religion can/will stop a president from getting elected.

A 3 second search and I found some "statistics" from randomhouse.com:
87% of Americans say they “never doubt the existence of God.”
More than 50% of Americans have a “negative” or “highly negative” view of people who don’t believe in God.
70% think it important for presidential candidates to be “strongly religious.”

How do you seperate church and state when the majority is bias to the church. This is not just voters, but lawmakers. I understand the law. Just cant see it ever being fully seperated.

This is not an attack on religion! I dont care what stories you belive in. Enjoy and exercise your rights. :dblthumb: I love that we can do that in America. :bigthumb:

Chruch = :poke: = State

But I do agree that the state should have 0 influence on who you are allowed to love and being able to express it in any safe manner, so long as it does not infringe on others rights.

I am thankfull for how far we HAVE come tho! I would have never have been born if not for relaxed views of the stringent relgions. Christian mother and Jewish Father. It would never have happened a hundred years ago. Mom and Dads families both were negative about it, but could not forbade it in this day in age. But the church-influenced-state can, and do stop other marriages.....

No, not necessarily. He simply has a strong opinion on the subject.

Sky pretty much summed it up for me. "I love it when people think gay marriage somehow affects their lives in some way."

If someone can share how a gay couple living together in a civil union negatively impacts them personally, I'd love to hear it.

Keep in mind, just because some folks might not share your opinion or take exception to some things you say, does not mean they are not adults. But you should be aware that there is usually some teasing that goes on in General Chat. So I would recommend not to take it too seriously.

Why is that immature? I can't believe that you'd think that being gay automatically means you're immature. Thats a whole lifestyle that someone may or may not choose, but end the end, they are homosexual. That doesn't make them any less mature than you are. Jeez man.
