I had a sub given to me by my stepdad. Me and a friend of mine installed it yesterday. It's a Rockford Punch 10 inch in a truck box. It sounds damn good for only being a 10, let alone in a truck box. What's the ideal box for this to get the most from it?

I take it that you don't have the manual? It'd usually tell you what the optimum box is. Or at least it would give you information as to what size you have to build it.

Usually ported/vented will give you the louded bass. Sealed will give you the "tightest" bass.

Well... If I can manage to get another friend's 15 for the time being (while he is car-less) I'll probably go with a ported box for the 10, or a sealed box for the 15. No, I do not have the manual for the sub, like I said it was just given to me by my step dad, who got it given to him too.

Ideal size?

Try a program called WINISD. It will usually give you a very close estimate for different type box sizes.

I'll play with it for a bit, that sounds sick, and post what I come up with.

Is the 10in Rockford 4ohm or 8ohm nominal?

I'll assume 4ohm unless told otherwise

No, I didn't know you were building Zach's box for him. I don't mind building my own, I actually like doing that kind of stuff. Where are Zach's 2 15's going?

I don't know if you'll be able to see this, but here's a picture of what the frequency response of your sub in a 3.791ft^3 vented box tuned to 33.02Hz will look like.

Unfortunately the sub you have is going to require a large enclosure to get a reasonably low frequency response.

If you don't have the space, I would recommend an MTX 12 in a sealed enclosure or something else that costs too much.

I suggest a Cerwin Vega HED 12in

I don't really plan on spending any money on this unless it's materials to build the box. I never had any intentions on putting any subs in my car, it came with a 640 watt amp to push highs and mids, and a 1000 watt amp just for subs. I parted out the 1000 watt amp within a week or so of owning my car because I had no intentions on putting in subs (since the previous owner took his out before he sold it). Now that I have a 10 incher for free, I do like the way it sounds, and just want a little more out of it.

What is 3.791 cubic feet in terms of height/width/depth. I'm really bad at calculating things in reverse.

Well, think of one cubic foot as 1foot by 1ft by 1 foot. Now you box will be nearly 4 ft by 4ft by 4ft. That's pretty damn big man. You won't have a trunk left, unless you have an SUV.

Now, you could BUY another sub that is exactly the same, model company, and build an isobarik enclosure totaling 1/2 3.791ft.

I don't think it's worth it to loose your entire trunk

Seriously though, check out Cerwin Vega 12in HED sub. It's $60 for one. WHich is dirt cheap.

I'll check that sub out. Meanwhile, since a 4x4x4 foot box is out, what size box will suffice for the time being?

Sorry, I totally had a major brain fart when I was explaining cubic feet dimensions.

A 6ft^3 box would have these dimensions: 3x2x1.

Huge boxes are great, but rather impractical. As much as getting a sub to recreate a 20hz tone in a car is cool and all, it's not really practical or necessary.

I generally suggest building the largest "practical" box you can, then find the best sub for that box, or subs (clamshell isobaric) and don't get stuck trying to fit a sub into a box .

Yeah, that's what I'm going for with the enclosure I'm building. The farther I get on it, the larger it seems.

I agree with Rex, it's not practical in most home systems, why would a car with even less space be a better location? Plus the weight that an enclosure that size adds is huge. The current model Rockford P210S4 10" subs require at least .75 cuFT or more. That would be internal diminsions of 9X12X12, with 3/4" MDF the external box size would be 13.5X13.5X10.5 inches. Forget about trying to tune the port of a car sub enclosure to 35 hz, most music doesn't have many audibles at that low of a frequency, and with road noise you would be able to identify the note anyway, unless that is the only speaker in the car.

Nope, that's what Fiberglass and other fibers are for. 1/3 the wweight of MDF with the same strength
