I was wondering if anyone has tried the route sport compact did with their SR20DET, remount the radiator towards the engine, with electric fans and run an IC in the place the radiator was. You would cut down on the amount of tubing and bends needed for a front mount. Just wondering what everyone thought on doing something like this, bad or good idea.

This would be good only if you ditched the A/C...

The intercooler needs to be in the path of ambient airflow - Putting it behind the A/C condensor (but in front of the radiator) would severly decreased thje effectiveness of the intercooler...

That, and with it right by the radiator, heat soak would be and issue while sitting in traffic (or waiting to run at an auto-x, dragstrip, etc...)- The heat from the radiator would just emanate forward and get the I/C up to a temp where it wouldn't be too effective IMO...

And the increased pipe length will really not hurt spool or response badly at all - I'd doubt you find it noticeable...Hell, I went from no intercooler at 6psi to a GReddy VSPL front mount kit with 2.75" piping and noticed nothing but a smoother 'smash' as the power came on as boost built - Before it was "BAM!!!", full boost at 3100, and a 75rwhp jump...now it's a little smoother transition from 0 to 6psi, but still full boost by 3100 or so, and more RWHP.

From what I understood of the article the IC was in front of the AC Condensor. I am not sure of this though, but if it was sandwiched between the two then ya I could see there being some problems.

Another thought of mine was to replace the mechanical fan and run a 25X6X3 in IC as a top mount in front of the engine. This would have to be done in conjunction with an inverted hood scoop though.

I always thought about doing a side by side set-up when I had a S13. I had no A/C. Basically, I would use a thicker radiator(3 core?), but not be as wide. Maybe 2/3rds the width. The left over third would be occupied by an I/C with top and bottom end tanks. With a stock or electric fan set-up with shroud providing airflow, it should solve most cooling issues since both the I/C and radiator would be getting fresh air with no obstructions. Piping would end up being quite minimal as well.

SCC Silvia with the 'disco potato' turbo had no A/C...so more room and no 'sandwich' issues...

I like it for the stealth-ness of it, but still - Front mount is better (when it comes to intercoolers...hehe) [ insert doggy-style joke here... ]
