Galaxy rocks.
Very well put-together game. Polished to a brilliant shine.
The game controls very well and, unlike Mario 64, the camera is excellent, both in ease of control and it's own automatic behavior.
The game's use of off-the-wall gravity adds a lot to what might otherwise be more mundane platforming. But it never feels contrived or gimmicky, and it doesn't get in the way of the fun of the platforming experience. It does provide some very cool "WHOA!" moments...much like Prey or Portal.
And the game looks spectacular. Colors are vibrant, shading is smooth, soft, and clean, and the water...WOW.
Sound as well is noteworthy. The game features some updated versions of classic, recognizable Mario tunes, and it brings back some great memories. There are even short sequences where Mario is challenged to collect all of a line of music notes in a limited time period. Each note picked up plays part of a classic Mario tune (or, in a few cases, some other piece of music). When mario dives underwater, the area's theme music fades and becomes more muffled the deeper he goes--a neat touch.
I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the multiplayer, which at first glance seems tacked-on, thin, and almost forced, is very enjoyable. It changes the pace of the game a bit, and if you've got someone who enjoys the 2nd player spot, can be a heck of a lot of fun.
I disagree with that review's major cons.
The game is not "disjointed." It's called "variety." There are a lot of unique levels, and considering the fact that it's a MARIO game, there's no need for continuity or any of that crap. Once again, Mario gets by just fine with a basic rescue the Princess plot underlying--but NOT interfering with--the gameplay. It's perfect.
And as for voice acting: NO! There's no reason! It would do nothing good for the gameplay--rather, it would probably drag the experience down. The Toads make some bizzarely-entertaning...er...noises. Bowser "speaks" in some unknown and angry sounding language. All the characters noises lend far more to the game than any voice-acting could. Apparently no one at Yahoo Games has ever played a Capcom game. Voice acting is a risky move. It's better to go the route SMG has and instead spend your time on giving your characters their own oddball and instantly identifiable sounds.
