Ok, I was bored today and decided to read the instructions for installing the IAP Stage 1 kit. As I was reading, I came to this section:

Step 14: Align included oil return flange HORIZONTALLY on the oil pan so you can look down the driver’s side of your engine and see it between the motor mount and A/C compressor. Hold flange in place and drill oil pan with a 1/2” drill bit to allow oil to return to oil pan. Align oil return flange and gasket with hole drilled and drill 2 3/8” holes that align with flange into the oil pan going through the pre drilled holes on the oil return flange and gasket. Use included NutSerts, tool and ¼ x 20 bolts to attach to oil pan. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! Apply generous amount of included Permatex silicone sealant to outer edge of oil return flange to ensure a leak free fit. Allow at LEAST 8 hours for the sealant to cure before refilling engine oil.

Does this mean that you don't have to remove the oil pan? What about the shavings that fall into the oil pan from drilling? If I could get away without having to pull the oil pan that would be great.

I see about 50 questions like this a week on every nissan forum about the oil pan tap. You should take the oil pan off and weld a bung on there. Not to mention you don't want to chance getting metal shavings in your engine. I have seen the iap oilpan fittings myself on Greg's car, I have seen them leak, I have seen greg put more rtv on them, they leak less...lol Long story short WELD THE BUNG ON THE PAN!!!!!!!!!

mine leaked with rtv and i ended up having a freinds just weld it on. as for shavings, i ended up flushing my oil a few times and didnt see shavings in the last few flushes, also i wiped them away as i drilled. but yeah i would recomend removing the oil pan to do the job right.

If you are going to use IAP's method, you should coat your drill bit in grease and drill slowly- that should help quite a bit in keeping shavings out of the pan.

...But 98s14inaz is right, the bung really needs to be welded.

Removing the pan is so damn easy, there's really no reason not to.

Loosen motor mounts, jack up engine an inch or two, loosen oil pan bolts, remove oil sump pickup tube, remove pan.
