Hey gang,

I've had the I35 in the garage for almost a month now collecting parts since I bought the car. So it's been sitting for a while.

When I put the car in reverse yesterday, it made a very unhealthy sound. It's a constant loud vibrating sound. It's not very nice! It does however seem to reverse properly, but the noise is a concern. When I shift back into drive it's perfectly silent.

I could do a quick video and host it on youtube to share the sounds...

Does this sound like a transmission issue or perhaps torque converter? It's only when put into reverse that it sounds bad.

So my next question is this... Does the 5 speed automatic from the Maxima swap in directly to the I35? I've heard the biggest knock against the I35 drivetrain is that lousy old 4 speed auto trans. So if I've got a bad trans, I'm thinking it's a great excuse to upgrade to a 5 speed auto.

I know the 4th gen autos had planetary gear issues. Could it have possibly been a lack of lubrication after sitting for a while? Have you checked to see if it does it consistently?

I still haven't put many miles on the car since driving it home.

I checked it out again today. Perfectly quiet in drive.... still very noisy in reverse, and I notice now that it is a bit noisy in park as well. It seems to actually try to climb the idle speed a bit as it sits. Then when I shut it off, you can hear it vibrate and slow down.

Bad torque converter?

Or maybe a blockage? You might try flushing the trans if you can't find anything obvious.
