My first post in Infiniti General ever!!

I do not own an Infiniti. I own and drive a Nissan 4 Foor Family car. And while I know my car could never be fast on my budget, I can make it more unique and enjoyable to drive.

I was inspired by the gauge pod of an I35. I thought the idea of having the guages black-out when you turn the car off is very impressive and very cool looking. With this inspiration I did some research. I just had to try it on my own ride. It was very simple to black out the guages when the car is off, tint the speedo glass. Seeing the guages was a different story. I custom wired the gauge lights to the power mirrors to get 12v power whenever the car is turned on. Whether I turn my headlights on or not, the guages are always lit when the car is running. That solved the "seeing the guages" problem...well almost. Now on to my question...Does anyone know what kind of bulbs lie behind the guages of an I35 or QX4? I see how bright the guages clusters are on the I35 and mine isn't that bright, infact on some sunny days seeing the guages is near impossible. I have learned to adapt.I have tried both 194 bulbs and 194LEDs both with weak results. The LEDs didnt last long behind the guages, the 194s are holding up fine but are dim. I need to know if the bulbs are transplantable from the I35 to a 97 Altima.

My second question, this one is shorter.

Does anyone see QX4 gauge clusters for sale? The reason I ask is I like the needles on the newer QX4's with the black-out guages. I also want to see if they can be transplanted into an Altima gauge cluster.

Any help out there would be appreciated.

Interesting project, I always liked that black-out look with the I35 too. I can only guess that you'd have to run higher wattage bulbs at the risk of melting something.

I'd check eBay for clusters - there are always a few Q clusters on there so maybe some QX ones too. You might also try http://www.car-part.com

The guages on the I35 (and M45 and G35, etc) are electroluminescent. They don't exactly have lights behind the guages, but rather glow when electric current is run across them. Getting really bright LEDs for your lights is probably the best way to simulate this as there aren't really bulbs per se to swap from an I35 if I understand correctly.

Thanks for all the info. I tired the single LEDs but never tried the clusters. Is there a real difference in brightness?

There's a wide range of brightness output from different brands at types of LEDs - alway know their output in Lumens.
