My "Service Engine Soon" light has come on. My 2002 I35 has just crossed 45K miles . The service manual says to check the gas cap and it was fine. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue. My 1997 jeep wrangler was programed to automatically set off the service light at 50K as part of an emission control. Is this the case with the I35 or has anyone experienced a more sever problem.

I also noticed that on the two exhaust pipes only one seems to be releasing air while the other one is luke warm. Is this an indication of anything? Could this be setting off the service engine light?

I would appreciate any feedback.I just bought my first Infinity ever (a 2002 I35) after driving a jeep wrangler for 10 years and man do I love it!

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I'll see what I can find out and will post up if I do find anything. We've got several members with I35s and 3.5 liter Maximas, so I'm sure someone will be able to help you out.

Why, advice on here is bad?

ffffly, go to a AutoZone (or some such place) and have them pull the codes. Let us know what the codes are and we can help you out. In all honesty, it will probably be an O2 sensor.

If you didn't notice you're on the NICO site. Also maxorgy will flame him for asking a question like that. They're a big encyclopedia, you gotta search and no one really wants to talk.

That's cool, but he was being an *******. By the way, why didn't you remove the stuff about maxorgy, I thought it was "against the rules" to point out other forums here (especially our competitors). I also think it's crap that someone who is a member here would refer someone to another site, even if he only has 10 posts. I assume he came here from maxorgy and saw that the maxima section doesn't roll thru a hundred threads a day, so he probably thinks that we're not as knowledgable. Little does he know NICO kicks a$$. END OF RANT!!!

I figure most members are pretty much here from the .orgy and didn't like it there or did not want to give out $$ for search. I might have been in a weak/sensitive mode at the time as well.

The "service engine soon" light is mislabelled. It should really read "check engine now" - that is, get a readout from your onboard computer.

Your Infiniti is not programmed to automatically remind you to service your engine at a certain mileage, or after a fixed number of miles since your last dealer service.

Below 2,000 rpm, only one tailpipe is open, and exhaust gases travel through an "S"-shaped snake of connected pipes inside your muffler that is three times the actual length of your muffler - so your car is extra quiet at idle and at low rpms (city driving). As rpms rise through 2,000 rpms (highway driving) an electronically-controlled valve inside your muffler opens and the second tailpipe begins to operate. Exhaust gases now vent through two parallel pipes and travel only a single length of the muffler before exiting the two tailpipes. This yields significantly lower back-pressure and higher horsepower. But it also makes the car (slightly) noisier....which is why the volume of your audio system is programmed to increase (slightly) as your engine rpms increase.

Neat, eh?

I don't know for sure how different exhaust systems are between Maximas and I35s but there was nothing except for baffels inside of my old one!!! There was no electronic switch of anykind. But maybe they put cooler stuff on the Maple Leaf versions of Nissan\Infiniti.

thats great to know! Thanks. As for the service engine soon light...it was an 02 sensor. I thought the o2 sensors usually lasted longer. On my wrangler the original sensor lasted almost 90K miles. Is that unusual?

Oh ok. I didn't know how things ran around here. Sorry.

O2 sensors don't last that long on 5th gen maximas and I30/I35's.

It kinda depends on the car. I have yet to have a MAF problem and I have yet had a O2 issue ( >106k right now )

Maybe I'm just lucky.

I just broke 80k on my '01 and MAF and O2 are just fine. Now that I said that I'm sure I jinxed myself and they'll both die by weeks end.

The Serv Eng Soon lite came on in my 2002 I35 last year. It was still under warranty and the dealer repair invoice read: Found DTC P0139 (code), repld 2ea O2 sensors per Service Bulletin 02-027A and reprogramed ECM. This occured with only 15K on the car.

The Service Engine Soon light also came on shortly after I got my 02 I35 at 35k and was determined to be a gas cap issue. Dealer confirmed it fails pressure test and replaced the cap at no cost. Is been fine ever since.

That's an odd one. Pulling codes should have shown that as an issue. Of course, I would have scratched my head over it before trying to replace the cap.
