Thinking of installing a FSTB on my 1999 I30. Anyone know the factory recommended torque specifications when replacing the strut tower nuts? Thanks!

you would be amazed on how many "mechanics" in my area do not even have a torque wrench

I guess the old model T method works most of the time to get the car out the door and past the 6 month warranty

Pretty scary!!!!!!!!!!!!

i believe that there's many 'mechanics' out there that don't even own a TQ wrench, but when a dealer is preaching not to use one there's a problem.

oh, i could tell you so much about dealer practices. its horrible. i try to be a good one, but i know some techs who are complete thieves. even assuming an honest tech, you still have to deal with a dishonest service writer. the service manager will tell you(the customer) that we always use tq wrenchs; he tells us(techs) that it is a waste of time unless its like a head bolt or something. me? i torque everything shy of an oil pan drain bolt. thats assuming i have specs. i know one tech who has an electric 3/8 impact and uses it to replace spark plugs as fast as possible. pathetic isn't it? i better stop before the boss walks in an yells at me. we are completely out of work right now or else i would be fixing something.

well i am just having too much fun complaining about the system we have here. we have too many techs around(dumb ones that work for $8 an hour clock time) and not enough work. normaly there would be lots of work and not enough of us to do it. in effort to get the work done, they try to get us to work faster. soon after they usually invoke mandatory overtime. one summer i worked 70+ hours a week every week. who knows how many bolts i forgot or misplaced in that kind of frenzy. work quality suffers no matter how hard you try when you are exausted. we used to have long thursdays from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm with one hour for lunch and half hour to eat pizza for dinner that the dealership bought. by quitting time, i just did not care if i put oil in a car or not(im exagerating).

want to know some more scary stuff? we used to be instructed that ALL nissans and infinitis took exactly 4 quarts of oil. when i got this job that was the rule. it was in place because thats what the parts department wanted to charge out on the ticket. i took the time to make a chart for us and for parts as to the oil fills on every model of nissan. how many cars did we overfill or underfill by as much as 2.5 quarts? a lot.

another scandal...know what kind of oil we use here? the same kind most dealers use. recycled bulk oil. ours is recycled by papco. how about atf. exxon superflow. regardless, ask the service manager and he will swear to you(seen him do it) that we use only penzoil products as per nissans reccomendation. when we do a 30k service we usually replace spark plugs. any car with platinum plugs we wait till 60k or 105k on the newer ones. does the customer pay less if they dont get the plugs changed? nope. they tell the customer that we take the plugs out and clean them. they tell us just get the car done/screw the plugs.

I know alot of crap goes on at the repair (money making) end of the dealer

Had a 2001 Civic that took 5w20 oil which could not be bought anywhere and even the dealer did not have it. Asked what they use and they said valvoline but when I looked behind the counter I saw some no name brand 5w30

These reasons and more a good enough for me to justify doing my own oil etc and buying a tool when needed to do the job myself. If it is done wrong I can only blame myself but at least I will know how to correct it
