MY '99 I3O TURNS OVER BUT WON'T START. THE ALARM LIGHT IS ON SOLID ON THE DASH ALSO. MECHANIC THINKS IT MAY BE SOMETHING TO DO WITH ALARM, BUT DOESN'T HAVE WIRING DIAGRAM TO DISABLE THE FACTORY ALARM. COULD THE STARTING PROBLEM BE RELATED?

I have the same exact problem with my 99 I30. I took it to the mechanic thinking I had a bad starter. Turns out the battery was halfway drained . Bring it to a mechanic and see what they say. It might just be the battery.

I have seen the alarm effect the vehicle starting before but not with a Nissan/Infiniti, and even at that particular vehicle wouldn't turn over at all. If you have one of the keys with the computer chip in it then it's possible it may have failed, i'm not real familiar with the anti-theft systems on these cars so somebody else may be able to shed some more light on that.

It sounds like it could be a number of things, on the 91 300ZX I had, it was doing the same thing due to an issue with the MAF(Mass Air Flow) sensor not working, causing it to turn over but not start. Could also be due to something as simple as a fuel pump relay, a fuse, battery, fuel pump, ect.

Can you be a little more specific as to what it's doing? Do you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on? Have you changed or repaired anything recently on it?

Your mechanic is probably correct. For 1999 an immobilizer system was added to the I30's alarm. The wiring diagram can be found on page 258 here.

The starting and SES problems may be related or not. -Check battery no load voltage is >12.5 VDC. Jump-start if low voltage and see if it works.-Clean battery terminal and connectors and then ensure tight connections.-Check fuses related to starter and immobilizer (fusible links are in a fuse box beside the battery).-Since your starter is working and if all of the above are Ok, then it could be the Park/Neutral safety switch, immobilizer or you have an open circuit somewhere. You may also have a problem with the fuel system (pump, filter, etc). Once I got stumped by a starting problem but finally able to fix it by cleaning the fuel injector grounding connections.

For the SES, get a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) so we can have an idea what's causing it. You can borrow and OBD II scanner from AutoZone or you can use the diagnostic procedure available from the FSM.

You probably got a refurbished starter with marginal performance. I have dis-assembled two of these starters and made them serviceable by simply cleaning and lubricating the planetary gears (white lithium grease) and cleaning the rotor and stator.

From your description, it seems like the starter is turning but the pinion gear is not engaging. You can check the starter solenoid and see if the pinion gear extends. If Ok, then test the starter itself (you need jumper wires and clips). It's also possible that something else aside from starter is causing your problem.

With the starter removed and using the battery:A. Test the Starter Solenoid- Connect positive side of battery to starter solenoid connector (single-wire connector)-Connect negative side of battery to starter frame. The pinion gear must extend. If not, starter solenoid is defective or inoperative shift lever/drive

B. Test the Starter (secure the starter to prevent it from moving)-Connect battery positive side to the starter battery input stud (back of starter solenoid). Connect a jumper wire from starter battery input to the starter solenoid single-wire connector. SECURE THE STARTER TO PREVENT IT FROM MOVING.-Connect negative side of battery to starter frame. The pinion gear extends and then the starter motor turns. If not, you have a defective starter motor or related assembly (rotor, stator, brush, etc).
