Hi All,

I just want to thank all of you for all the great info and tips on replacing the knock sensor in my I30. I read all the threads regarding it. I just finished installing it, it took me over an hour and a lot patients most of the time was getting that dam screw started.

The Infinity dealer told me it was going to be $417 w/parts and labor. THey showed me were it was and I said there is no-way I'm paying someone to remove a bolt and replace it. Needless to say, I decided to fix it myself, the KS cost me $70. Bridegwood Motorsports and the flex-socket was $8.50. I took it for a 10 mile ride but, the SES light is still on.

Will the SES light go out on its own or do I have to have the code cleared ??

Thanks again,Dave

Going to have to have the code cleared. Go to an Autozone. They'll do it for free.

Kenny,

Thanks. After a ride to get the Sunday pape I kinda figured that. But I didn't know Autozone would clear it.

Thanks again,

Dave

Autozone refuses to actually be the ones to clear it. They had a law suit regarding that and they told all their employees to stop doing it. It doesn't mean that some won't still do it, but you might have a harder time.

However they won't stop you from "renting" it, which is free, and go to clear it yourself. I normally just give them my license, go out to the parking lot, clear it, and bring it back and call it a day. It's not hard at all to clear it. And you get to see each and every code that's brought up. I always prefer it that way.

Exactly like you said. Gave the dude at AutoZone my license, reset the codes, piece of cake !

Done, now I can get my inspection sticker.

no problem. I've been in and out of there about 7 times in the past 4 months to do that. I've been having issues with my injectors and maf sensor. Glad I could be of help.

Were you actually throwing a code for the knock sensor to begin with? I was under the impression that they were ghost codes and it would actually be something else that would throw the CEL.

Just currious... --Mike

Well Mike, this is a bit of a long story....My ex and I purchased this car new in 1997. I traded in my 94 Seville STS for it. I also bought a new 97 S-10 truck (still have it). About a month ago she called me asked me if I wanted the car for $1500...she new the Seville was my baby. But the I30, wouldn't pass Mass. Inspection. In the meantime, she dumped around $600 into it trying to find out whats wrong with it. Got pissed of because of she's the "woman thing" and bought a new BMW 328xi. So the State recommended bringing it to a Qualified State Inspection place... They figured it out P0325 knock sensor, another $75 she spent !!

So I called Infinty, they wanted $417. parts and labor. It ended costing me $100. Parts, tools, and 1 1/2 hours. No SES light yet, after this Wednesday, it will be the 3rd day and if it stays out, it's fixed. I live in NH, there a little more lenient with older vehicles when it comes to emissions.

I read what you wrote also through the many threads but, so far so good. After Wednesday check back, I'll keep you posted.

yeah, that's why I had a vague idea on how Autozone would treat you because the General Managers of those stores tend to keep everyone on the same page. I also worked at an Advance in Goffstown and got to know a lot of other parts people.

eBay has them.

Interesting story here... my check engine light (Autozone confirmed it was the KS) has been on for about a year and a half, and I'm due for an Emissions check (Ohio requires them once every 2 years), so I started looking eBay for a new KS, and found it.

Before I bought it, My exhaust broke off by the Cat. Conv., so I took it to a local nuffler shop to have it replaced. $70 later, I had a new pipe & new muffler, and no check engine light!?!?!

So, I called them back up sounding like a fool, saying why is my check engine light out? And they told me that in these cars, KS's hardly go bad, the code is thrown by the exhaust pipe.

3 months has passed, and my check engine light came on once when I put 87 gas in my car. After refilling with 92, the light went out again.

Long story short, you might want to check your exhaust...

Yes it does, now I'm looking to modify the car a little, but I don't know where to start. I know I need to get scratches and a couple of rust spots fixed.

The KS won't turn on the CEL.

If the knock sensor wouldnt turn on the CEL why is there a code for it? 0304 is the code I beleive.

And have you noticed and fuel economy/ performance increases since installing the new knock sensor?

Believe me, I have a KS code in mine that I can't clear with the scan tools, and it doesn't kick on the CEL - matter of fact, I had a KS code in my '95 Altima, and it didn't kick on the CEL either.

Also, just got one of the new generation KS from eBAY for $49.95 shipped - should be here today or tomorrow. (supposed to be more resistant to knocks that aren't engine pre-ignition knocks)
