Hi All,

I have a problem that I am looking for some information about. I know I will need to take this to the dealer since I am clueless, but I would like to try and understand what is happening.

I have a 2000 I30t with 83k miles, I was returning home after driving most of the day, and then the car died while coming up to a light. Everytime I started the car, the car and engine would start up, but it wouldn't idle. The engine would just die and the Service engine light would be on. I then realized that if I kept giving the car a bit of gas, the engine wouldn't die until I took my foot off the pedal. Once I take my foot off the gas though, it dies again. The car is pretty much undrivable in this state.

I managed to get the car to a safe place, and even had it so it would idle this morning (With service engine light on). Yet when I went back to check on it later, it was the same problem of the engine dying unless it is getting gas. Any info about what might be happening would be appreciated

On a side note, I have had nothing but problems with the car for the past month and 1/2. I can't keep throwing money at the car and need to start teaching myself how to fix things and understand what needs fixing and what doesn't. Does anyone have advice on the best ways to start maintaing your own car, when starting from scratch

Thanks

Go to Autozone and have them read the codes for you. They can also reset the light but it sounds as if it will cut back on anyways.

My guess is either Idle Air Control Valve(or the like) or Throttle Position Sensor or Mass Air Flow sensor.

Download a Factory Service Manual and start reading.http://www.phatg20.net/modules...id=59

Post back and let us know the codes.

Thanks for the reply Burijon

I couldn't take the car to Autozone because it was just too dangerous to drive, so I had to have it towed to the dealer. You were right with your guess. The problem was that the Idle Air Control Valve went bad. The dealer said that it had an internal short. They also reccomended that I replace the starter which has been sounding wierd for the last 4 months. Its costing me $1077 for parts, labor, tax.

Thanks for the link as well, I found it the other day and have already started reading
