Does the strut spring need to be compressed before removing the lower mounting bolts? After much searching, I don't see anything about it. Isn't the spring providing down force on the on the knuckle? I don't have a FSM.

Welcome to NICO.

No you don't need to compress the spring. The top mount on the strut is holding the spring compression. You may find that the strut does extend a bit after removal. In that case, you can attach 1 of the lower strut bolts and use a jack under the lower A-arm to help get things lined up properly if needed (normally you can wrestle it into place).
