Can I assume that the I30 Bose setup is much like the J30? As in the head unit can be replaced with an aftermarket with the correct adjusments (the originally speakers will remain).

The GF's I30 cd player is dead and we don't feel like spending $200+ to have it fixed. I would rather just put in a new unit that looks sharp and can at least match the stock Bose unit quality. We're not stereo maniacs so as long as it works we'll (she'll) be happy. But I don't want the distorted sound that people have complained about when switching to an aftermarket unit. The I30 has the 6 speaker setup.

We will be taking the I30 to a local shop that has a lot of experience working with Bose, but I still want to be able to walk in there and tell them what NEEDS to be done and how I want it done.

Also, is it possible to get a decent head unit in the $200-300 range? I haven't researched car audio stuff since I was in high school (8 years ago) so I'm a bit behind.

The head unit there is tons of stuff. A Pioneer Premier 650 cost about 270 and is very much top of the line. The only thing that head unit is missing is the 4 volts. It has 2.2 volts which in my opinion is actually better. And its missing some cell phone mute thing that the Pioneer 9400 has. So I would go with the Premier 650 or the Pioneer 6500. They are both below 300.

Thanks scruf, that at least puts me in the ball park for the unit.

for that case, chris, you will want something like this line out converter.

i didint have a chance to go to the PIE website, but it looks like you may be able to keep the bose amps in there as well

for future reference,

something like this

http://www.logjamelectronics.com/sounlocbosli.html

can be used to get outputs from the OEM bose to be sent to an external amplifier for subwoofers or what have you.

Wow, that seems almost too convient for the conversion. The application years stop at 94 and the I30 is a 96 although 94 falls in the same generation gap for that model. If it's that simple I could do it myself (and replace those a/c bulbs to while I'm at it)

You think this will work too?http://www.installer.com/cars/nissan.html Part #NISAH4N

What about the antenna? There's got to be a switch that sends power to the antenna so it'll extend when the radio is on. Is this typically compatible?
