I need to change the transmission fluid on a '96 i30. The fsm describes a procedure to do a simple drain and fill, but only lists the full fluid capacity including the torque converter (10 qts).

Can someone give me a ball park number of how much will actually come out by simply opening the drain plug? I don't want to buy 10 qts if only 3 or 4 will be needed.

If you truly want to do this, then there is no substitute for a mechanical fluid exchange. Pan should be dropped and cleaned and fliter replaced. Gravity drain and fill only dilutes old used fluid with new fluid.

Try BG Dealer Finder, but call to verify first. Some SnapOn equipped garages have the Sun machine which can also power evacuate and refill (or fluid exchange if it is really bad) your PS fluid also.

Since the car is so old (8 yrs , 93k miles) & there was no record of it ever having been changed, I decided to go for the procedure in the FSM - drain and fill, rather than risk stirring sludge into all the wrong places with a machine.

Everybody who responded to the question said 4 quarts would come out. I drove it around for 10 minutes in the Dallas summer heat (mid-90s F) to warm it up, let it drain for about an hour and right at 6 quarts came out.

So now the follow up question - is 6 quarts normal, or is this an indication that something else is not right?

1) If a filter change /pan drop is done first there is no chance of that.2) Dont know..:oface
