Since the car is so old (8 yrs , 93k miles) & there was no record of it ever having been changed, I decided to go for the procedure in the FSM - drain and fill, rather than risk stirring sludge into all the wrong places with a machine.
Everybody who responded to the question said 4 quarts would come out. I drove it around for 10 minutes in the Dallas summer heat (mid-90s F) to warm it up, let it drain for about an hour and right at 6 quarts came out.
So now the follow up question - is 6 quarts normal, or is this an indication that something else is not right?
