All Crewcabs in the states are V6 only, so that ends the debate about the 4 banger vs. the 6.
On a 2wd, i'd agree that a 2005+ is the better truck, but I'd debate it on a 4x4 (why not get a 4x4 and start building it?). The 2004 and older 4x4's have significantly stronger drivetrain components from the H233B/R200A axle combo to the manually shifted TX-10A Tcase. (some 2003-2004 models got the smaller C200 rear that still has been more reliable than the new axles) The 2005+ have been very problematic in this area with LOTS of cracked open aluminum R180 fronts, and lots of lunched carriers in the Dana44 variant rear axle, as well as electronic failures in the Tcase. Nissan hasn't been good at warranting the replacments either, instead choosing to blame actually using the 4x4 capabilities of the truck as the culprit and sticking owners with thousands of dollars in replacement and repair.
Certainly the engine in the 2005+ is far superior, making much better HP and slightly better fuel economy to boot. That said, a cared for VG33E is easily a 300k mile engine and will run a long time under normal use. Just keep that timing belt replaced at the recommended intervals (every 105k per the manuals).
2000-2004 were the years for the D22 crew cab. 2000's had the older front clip with a metal bumper and a real grill that looked a little less like a Tonka truck. That early dashboard design carried over to the redesigned 2001's. 2002-2004 got an updated (and less attractive, IMO) interior. I have a '98 Frontier and a 2002 Xterra (Fronty's and X's share the same dash, etc.), and I much prefer the layout and gauge readaibilty of the '98.
2wd trucks can have the same rear ends as the 4x4's, as well as the same front suspension, minus the front axle and hubs. Lift kits are universal - what works on a 2wd CC works on a 4x4. The little 4 banger 2wds run a differnt front end setup and sit much lower on the springs.
As for the auto in AZ heat...the cooling system is just barely adequate in the 2000-2004s and I'd strongly recommend an aftermarket transmission cooler. If I had it to do over again, I'd have bought a manual in my Xterra.
