I have a brisk 10-30 minute commute to-from work and to-from school, all on wide multilane suburban highways. Hearing the VH45 becomes addicting, enough to mash the throttle pedal and leave it there just for giggles. Unfortunately, all I can hear is the engine making music and nothing at all from the exhaust... unless I open the windows.

My n00b question...Is it possible to just replace the muffler to enjoy more sound at WOT without having to spend to replace the entire system? I've been reading all the exhaust threads and it seems that everyone goes for $600-$800 expenditures that change the entire exhaust front to back. Wondering if I can just replace the muffler alone.

The only thing I've ever done with an exhaust system is tell the guy at the shop to "replace the rusted bits so it stops making noise." This is all pretty foreign to me.

I'm not really looking to release more power. Just wanting to make some noise at the right moments.

Remove what's behind the cats and in front of the BIG muffler at the rear ... that should awaken her a little .

I use the exhaust in place of a horn to express my displeasure with people doing ~10-15 below the marked speed limit.

I forgot who it was, but it doesn't seem like it was too long ago one member posted a video to let us hear his mod. He had the rear muffler removed and had some pipe bent up and installed so the exhaust wasn't just dumping under the car. It sounded sweet as hell. I'm gonna have a shop my brother frequents down in San Diego county do the same for me next time I drive down to visit family/friends. Hopefully I'll get to do it soon-ish, at least by my birthday in November.

the simple answer is YES. Replacing just the rear muffler is the best thing you can do, you dont really need to replace the entire exhaust to get the sound your looking for.... new rear mufflers can be had for $150-250. Leave the premufflers installed and you can always delete them for not much money later if you want it louder....

Exhaust bypass setup. Then, at a flick of a switch you can go "open headers" loud.

For those with a real V8, the switch is called the accelerator .

That would be Ozzie. Run some 'test pipes' in place of the suitcase and you've got a growler, no wait a Roarer.

Exhaust cutouts have been around since the roaring twenties - maybe even longer. Used to be a common J.C. Whitney catalog item (right next to the toilet paper oil filter adapters)

Doesn't Nissan use a variable backpressure exhaust on the Maxima? Maybe something that could be modified for the Q?

Just throw on an aftermarket muffler. The combination of a less restrictive muffler and the stock resonators will sound great. It will result in a very deep throaty tone, but if you remove the resonators it will be more raspy.

mine are removed.

Reminded me of the sound of Robs car (forgot who owns it now) in his old video talkin about the headers.

Raspy, like its got bite Wes

thats the only way I can describe it. As a refrence most 4.6 mustangs next to me in traffic are much louder. No annoyance as far as Im concerned.

That's all I did to get the Maxima to sound the way it does. $300 bucks for a new muffler, resonator, and cat-back plumbing. I did it for exactly the same reasons you're considering it: I wanted some exhaust noise to accompany the engine noise. Worked beautifully. On the Q I'd imagine you'd be safe without the resonator. The video posted by ozzie is a modified Q45 exhaust with just the rear 'suitcase' muffler and pipes leading into it replaced with test or straight pipes.
