I have just got a 1996 240SX. Right now its got a stock KA in it and I want to give it the engine it should have. I have been driving (and by driving i mean racing and drifting) for a few years but never really worked on a car myself. I have some friends that have been doing it for quite a while (working on cars I mean) and they will be helping me along with w/e professionals I can dig up. Im asking how long its going to take b/c this is also my daily driver. So if anyone could help me shed some light on this that would be great. Also if anyone could help me with a location to find a black top SR20DET and w/e parts i would also need would be much appreciated and I would be very grateful. thanks a lot guys<(^-^<)~Tristan

if this is going to be your first swap, I'd highly suggest doing it with someone experienced.

Check the regional forums or ask around to find some local shops that import JDM engines... I'd rather get my engine from some place local instead of have it shipped, just incase 1) I'm missing parts or 2) I get damaged parts. You'll save yourself a ton of time and money by doing so, instead of having to wait for shipping time and all that bs.

Also, depending on what experience and tools you may have, I've seen shops spend as much as a week on a swap (probably dedicated an hour or two per day due to other customer's rides). My buddy used to have an ad up on craigslist where he'll go to your house and swap the engine for you all in one day... so one day swaps are totally possible.

it all depends on if you have everything ready for the install. and everything means down to the last bolt needed. \my bro got one done in 7 hrs. from turn key to turn key. but he spent quite some time getting everything ready for in install. as long as your car is running take your time and get the quality parts for the things you want to do. get a better radiator replace some of the gaskets while the motor is out if you get a s14 sr there are fsm's floating everywhere around here, follow the specs on the fsm and start replacing the hard stuff to get to while its out. trust me it gets really friggin hard to get some of those bolts on while the motor is in the car. it can be done but its gonna take longer and your probably going to shed some blood while doing it. so do some maintenance on it and get everything ready, but if you have a few guys that are car nutz you should be able to do the swap in a weekend pull one day and prep, next day install and run but be sure to take your time gathering all the parts tho. dont jip yourself on cheap parts, use the reliable parts may cost a bit more but there proven to work for the things your going to put it through. and for motors im not sure im trying to source a s13 front clip for a show car good motor good body good dash type of thing but no luck yet.good luck tho

yeah, this happens, and as your swapping, you start to want BETTER parts. like now im waiting on a t28 rebuild kit. luckily enough for me, my friend has a 13 chassis that were swapping my sr into FIRST, to get everything running perfectly befor we swap it into my daily.

the swap itself? depending on whos helping you... can take a day. can get an sr out of its chassis in an hour. if you know the steps, its easy. getting it in is always longer, but yeah, good luck on it.

Im going on about 4 months myself, only because its been real cold. (The high for today is -5) But its pretty straight forward and since you have friends to help it shouldnt take to long.

i did my swap in my garage by myself and dont have any years of mechanical work it pretty easy to do just look up as much info as possible on the internet and you should be fine i did mine in 16days working 6 days a week and wated for parts for 4 days. if your thing about doing stuff like turbo gaskets or any other type of seals or clutch samve up and do it while engine is out. so far i have replaced clutch oil pan gasket and turbo gasket one it was in the car it would have been alot easyer while the motor was out.

On my First Full Build/Swap on my USDM S13 took me one day.

Fired up running Day1 and Driving on the 2nd day ever since for 2 years now.

Read up on swap processes and make sure you have everything you need.

Then again ive been working on S Chassis and R Chassis for over 2 years before then. :P
