Okay, I have a 89 240sx with a DOHC KA24det...250whp and I want to start auto x but From what I'm reading I'd be in a more experienced class right from the get go...is there anything else i can do except buy a stock car?

I really want to start doing it this year locally and such but I don't know if my car will be "bad" enough for me to run novice?

you can run novice up to 8 times or till you wint he novice pax which is based on the pax multiplier for the class your car belongs in, the S13 chassis is popular and competetive in STS which is a street tire class but I don't think forced innduction is allowed, SM I believe will be where you fit but whatever you have going on unless you are on R comppounds your will not be competetive, just take your car out to the event, tell them honestly what engine and suspension mods you have and run whatever class your car fits, if you enjy it enough then you cna considder building your car to better fit a specific class, it's all about having fun, just run whatever class you are legal for, get some seat time, meet some other entheusiasts learn how to handle a car in an autocross setting and enjoy the experience

Should I sign up for SCCA and pay for it and such? And start going to events or should I find one of they're training courses first? I looked around and there isn't many and I would have to travel. But I don't mind if its almost necessary. I'm going to a local track as soon as they open and I'm going to start trying to practice..

I've been wanting to for awile now so I know i'll enjoy it. :D

auto x isn't generally done at tracks, it's done in parking lots, you don't have to be a member to participate, you just pay a bit more, if you enjoy it and plan to do it more, then you might want to join

looks liek pitsburg is your local scca club, and looks liek they don't have a schedule up for 09 yet, looks like their first event of the year last year was at the end of aprilhttp://www.steelcities-scca.org/Autox/schedule.asp

I would bet SM as well. And it isn't really a more "experienced" class as much as it a class that allows more mods.

There arn't any classes that are more experienced than any other, just the amount of mods allowd. In G-Stock you would get PW3ND by Mini Coopers, in ST it would probably be a civic doing the whoopin, in SM it could be any number of cars that will thrash you.

Just go out and have fun. If you deceid you want to be more competitive, then start prepping your car for what ever class you want.

And no autoX's aren't normally ran on race tracks. Although some times they run special events on race tracks. The Nebraska Region does on occasion. And I think some of the Virgina regions may as well.

And you need to find out how your region runs novice groups. I know KC doesn't even have a novice group. You might also be able to run in a "Street Tire" class. Where you compete against all the other people on street tires regardless of what class they are in. Everything is based off of each competitors classes PAX time to determine a winner. NOTE: don't confuse the Street tire Class for the Street Touring Classes, that don't allow R-comps (Or non-factory forced induction).

Thank you guys, you helped me a lot, and looking from that website, they're are a lot of time for me to go out and race.

But I though I had to join scca? How much more is it if I don't join and just want to race for now?

If you're interested, NICO will be holding its 3rd annual autocross event at Carlisle Fairgrounds Mothers Day weekend. Its free with paid admission to the Carlisle Performance and Style show. Unlimited runs over 3 days.

Last time i was at an SCCA event, if you werent a member, you had to buy a weekend membership on top of the entry fee.

We also had a rear wheel drive street tire class that had a bunch of rear wheel drive street tire cars competing on index based on what class they would fall otherwise fall into.

around here we have what we call high speed autocross on actual race tracks. basically time attacks.

I do both, parking lot cone courses and high speed autocross on the local tracks.

i personally have my own class at auto x events because there aren't many modded pickups at events

its always a grey area with stuff like this

one thing that will definitely set you over the top is a stripped trunk... no trunk lining i'll probably say no to SM but possibly

i'm not the best at classing... i just know i have to run in a prepared class because i'm fully stripped including the pass seat at events

IIRC SM = full race car (well almost), with full interior, You will probably end up in a prepared class.
