Does anyone have any idea what all would go into this? This seems like an awfully economical way to get a sweet, unique 400hp S14 to me....especially because I <3 old school.

I know that the L-series shares certain similarities with the KA, although I don't know what specifically they are. I have been told it wouldn't be a tough engine to drop in.

Now, I am not right on the verge of doing this with this particular engine, I just have a general curiosity regarding whether or not it'd work, particularly because no one seems to have ever done it before.

Anyone know what the stumbling blocks might be?

And I don't want to hear any "D00D just get an eSSar twinny!!" or "RB's are t3h bett4r!!". That's not what this thread is for.

Hell ya it's wacky, look at that engine bay what a PITA to work on. If it were me, I'd much rather spend my money going RB but to each his own I guess.

the L-series engines were in the old datsun Z cars IIRC. i think the 240z and 280z used the L24 and L28, respectively. but my knowledge on datsuns is not as good as it should be.

Just so we don't get the "why" question asked too much, the upsides of going this route are the following:

-Engine is fully built for a reliable 400hp for only $2500, delivered.

-The L28ET is a USDM engine. If I need parts, I can find them for almost nothing. If I break something, I can get it fixed cheaply and immediately.

-From what I hear, the L-series blocks share certain similarities with the KA that would make this comparitively easy.

And yes, the L28ET is the engine from the Nissan 280ZX Turbo, but the base L28 block is the same engine used in the Datsun 280Z.

My biggest question is just, would it fit? What transmission would I use, and what all custom fabrication would be involved. If there's a little, I'll seriously look into this. If there's a lot, then the cost/benefit would be outweighed and I'd go with a more proven platform.

I don't *think* there'd actually be too much, far less than there would be with, say, a VH45 or an other-OEM engine like a 2JZ.

What I need to know is an educated estimate of exactly what would be involved.

I mean, break it down this way. The engine costs $2500. Let's say we had $2500 of custom work required for the swap. That's $5000 for a rock-solid 400hp that's cheap and easy to fix. That would put this well ahead of, say, an RB swap in terms of cost/benefit to get to 400hp. It's also important to note that I don't want any more than 400hp, so the RB's ability to go above and beyond that is irrelevant to me.

dizammmnn duuuudee juust gitt you one a dem JDM tizyte Essaarr Tweeennyzz. TUUURRBOOO ReD toP

Sorry, had to.

If you can get 400 reliable HP for less than $3000. I don't care if it's that 1.3Liter triple turbo-d engine Nissan made for the mail trucks. Do it.

I'm all for it.
