I want PICTURES of KA24DET's! And assorted turbo newbie questions...

Hey all...I'm pretty sure that come summer I'm going to be turbocharging my KA24DE (92 k miles, excellent shape,) with no more than 7 psi of boost, and it will be intercooled.

Anyway, I'm very illiterate about turbocharging in general, as well as the set-ups for KA24DE's...I want to be as knowledgeable as I can be come june when i decide to turbocharge my baby...First off...I'm a very visual learner...Does anyone here who has a KA24DET have detailed pictures of their setups? (And more importantly, their setups on S14's?) Specifically, the intercooler/plumbing areas (from the bottom of the car or the a birds-eye view, and the actual turbo/manifold area, and the downpipe/ambient air inlets on the turbo, etc etc...)If you have any pictures of a KA24DET, or know of any websites with the pictures, please post the links! I want to see how these people plumbed their intercoolers on the S14/what they used/what type of manifold/turbo they had...

Also, does anyone have a good turbocharging information site for relative newbies (that is more in-depth than http://www.howstuffworks.com???) Like the a/r ratios and the numbers on the turbocharger, and how this relates to buying the correct turbocharger/manifold for the KA???

And, can anyone tell me what would be the best turbocharger/manifold combo if I'm lookin at 7 psi and around 220 whp? I'm thinking rev-hard manifold? I've heard if the flanges aren't cut in between the exhaust outlets of each cylinder that the manifold is prone to cracking?

I've read all of the FAQ's on turbocharging the KA24DET, and I'm still not satisfied, I want more information, and more detailed information, specifically geared toward newbies.

Can anyone help? Thanks a lot!

MARC

http://www.jeff240sx.freeservers.comI have some pics up there.Revhard redesigned their manifolds, and made them thicker. I haven't had problems with my manifold in 10k miles...On http://www.zilvia.net there is a Turbocharger thread in the FAQ section. You have to sign up to read it, but it's a great thread, with tons of links for VE calculations, turbo sizing, ect.

I will be making my own IC piping in a couple weeks (when my engine gets rebuilt, and stupid JE sends me the correct pistons!), so I'll take pics of that process, as well as anything else you need.If you have questions, email me at [email protected]-Jeff

i'm kinda suprised that no one has recommended Maximum Boost by Corky Bell yet. I know he just asked for sites, but that book is great for people new to turbocharging systems. Very informative, I highly recommend it!

Thanks for the pictures everyone...Cdigity, I saw your KA24DET in a previous post entitled "another KAT in CT for ya!"How did you go about fabricating your intercooler piping?/how much did it cost? What kind of manifold/turbo/boost are you running? External or internal wastegate? Fuel management? Thanks!

Runs about $32 @ BN...In the intro, he states that you should know the basic concept of how a turbo setup works. If youre fairly intelligent you should be able to grasp what hes got to say...

Buy it, learn it, Preach it...hehe

Yeah, Maximum Boost...best single resource I can think of. It's obvious that I think pretty highly of it. It really cleared up a lot of things for me.

The other thing is an FSM. Become VERY familiar with ever aspect of the car before you begin if you want as little downtime as possible.

Also, make sure everything is clean...helps out alot. I'll be happy to help...hopefully I'll have some pics up soon of everything. But, getting the car to run is the top priority at the moment.

I am also planning to turbo up my KA engine sometime in the near future and am basically in the same position as MarkEmark. I am planning to piece together a custom kit with 370cc injectors running off a JWT ECU.

My questions are:

1) How is the clearance between the manifold/turbo and the master cylinder?

2) What type of fittings do I need for the oil feed line on the sender end and the turbo end.

3) What type of fittings do I need for the oil return line?

4) What's the maximum size intercooler that can fit in a stock S14 bumper without doing any cutting? What about minor cutting? And finally, what about major cutting?

5) How difficult is it to fabricate the downpipe? I know you have to weld a flange at the exhaust end, but what about the turbo end?

Not much. You need a heatsheild before you smoke the resavoir. As you can see from my pic i don't have one and i have duck tape around the resavoir :)Quote »2) What type of fittings do I need for the oil feed line on the sender end and the turbo end.
Most places that sell it list it for different size turbo's. So whatever size turbo you're gonna use. say a t3. it should say t3 oil line inlets and outlets in the discription.Quote »3) What type of fittings do I need for the oil return line?
same thing here

Quote »4) What's the maximum size intercooler that can fit in a stock S14 bumper without doing any cutting? What about minor cutting? The T3/TO4E is generally considered the best all around turbine for the KA24 series. There is a thread entitled the best turbo for the KA floating around. It has several choices in trim to choose from. http://www.store.yahoo.com/cheapturbo/gartur.html has several well priced turbo's. The T3/TO4E 50 trimj with .63 AR will perform well.

The Rev Hard Mani will work well with the above turbo. If the mani you get doesn't come with expansion reliefs between the exhaust runners, simply cut some yourself. Although I don't believe the RevHard is prone to cracking.

If you have any more questions, feel free to email me [email protected]

1. Use thermo tech wrap, it works wonders on underhood temps. I would wrap the Exhaust side of the turbine as well as the downpipe and mani.

2. You should be able to get everything you need from a Home Depot or similer type of store. There are several different types to choose from, Rosan fittings and normal AN/MS type fittings. The same goes for hose. I used high pressure fuel hose on my Skyline for 3 years with no problems. Or you could invest in some steel braided line and make it look pretty. http://www.summitracing.com also has line and fittings if you figure out the exact sizes you want.

3. Same for the oil return line as the feed line. Accept your going to need to either weld the fitting to the oil pan, or have it threaded into the oil pan. If you use a threaded fitting you'll need to use a sealant such as JB weld to assure you don't leak oil. You don't want this line to have any restrictions, such as bends or kinks. Since the oil is scavenged by gravity. Any backup will cause damage to the turbo.

4. Look at the size IC's that come in preassembled kits. Those most likely don't require any major cutting. Other then a slight trim of the bumper cover. Whick can be done with a dremel or high speed grinder....I've seen a guy use a pair of dikes.

5. The down pipe requires an adapter at each end. One for the Cat/test pipe and one for the exhaust side of the turbine. You can get these at most site that distribute turbo's. Just make sure you get the right adapter. The piping itself can be welded to make the bends or have an exhaust shop handle the whole thing. I'd recommend the exhaust shop. Should't be much more the 50 bucks.

Hope that helps...
