Hey guys! I have a 1999 Infiniti QX4 that needs a camshaft position sensor on the passenger side replaced. Trouble is, there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING on the web explaining where this bugger is. I have been swearing at my truck for the past two days and refuse to give up. If anyone could please help me find this thing I owe you my life.

The crank sensor is located at the driver rear of the engine.
Actually bolted to the bell housing on the transmission.
Here is a diagram of it's location.

I've read the entire manual for my car from this site. There is no mention where it is located only what it does, and how to test the voltage.

From what i read the cam sensor IS built into the distributor and can NOT be replace, you will have to replace the whole distributor unfortunately these model years for the QX and Pathy are known for having a faulty distributor.

Read this...I guess you can get to it and try cleaning it too...good luck! let us know if it worked.

I hope not! I did buy the part from autozone for my year and make. So its definitely somewhere. I also read in the manual to remove the sensor when uninstalling a different part. But failed to show where it was located. I have looked at every Google Image and every Youtube video. At a dead end here

I have a '98 Pathfinder so it should be in the same place. Remove distributor cap, remove rotor, remove black dust cover, see camshaft sensors? BTW to remove the rotor you have to loosen the philips head set screw.

As a matter of fact...I think i will go look, :yesnod

Are you sure you have camshaft position sensors? I thought the variable cam advance stuff started with the 3.5L in '01, and without variable cam advance, I don't see any sense in a cam position sensor.

Look at EC 281 page, I think you have a crankshaft position sensor.

At autozone; the Cankshaft and Camshaft sensors are the same exact thing... This is just turning into a nightmare.

I have a 2003 QX4 and the cam pos sensore looks a lot like what you posted. Here is a link to the photo of a 2001 which is same as mine. I'm thinking they may have sold you something for a later model year:

I did check under my 98 Pathfinder VG33E distributor and it does look just like the EC 281 picture for the 99 QX4 camshaft position sensor.

Here's for my rig
EC 268

Ours are the same it appears.

So in conclusion, It is built into the distributor and the only way to fix this code and get my QX4 to start is buy a new distributor? :ohno:

OR you can try cleaning it first. I would use MAF sensor cleaner or electrical contact cleaner in spray format. Worth a try and i think a can of it is under 10 bucks.

Just took it apart, a lot of strange things that definitely don't belong.

Bent and cracked, looks like it has been rubbing against dust cover, plastic is scratched and worn from it touching.

Also looks like some random ball bearings?

Getting it towed to a shop, I'm no mechanic but I can fix just about anything... Not this time.
Thank you for all your help! :dblthumb:

Update on the Truck. Just got home with her, Had to get a brandy new distributor. Mechanic charged $580 not very happy about that, but very happy that she is running like a champ. He did give me some BAD news. Sludge was all over the distributor and could of caused the problem... So now I'm battling sludge and a new tie rod that is "dangerously loose"
