I recently asked Fred about what type of oil I should use for my next oil change.... Here is the string of email messages....

WES:Fred,I have been doing some research, as I amdue for anoil change here right as I do my plenum job(still1000 miles short, but 90 days is up)... Iwasshopping around for some oil to do my change, andIwas gonna go with M1 synthetic, but I alsosawvalvoline synpower, and it wasconsiderablycheaper..... I saw you recommendedsynpower fordirtier engines (mine).... my valvecovers will beoff in a few days, so you can see justhow dirty itis and if i need to take any action toclean thingsoff.... Personally, I am a valvolinefan.... All my fluidsin my car right now (sans trannyfluid and brakefluid) are valvoline products..... Would thesynpower be just as good as M1.... Also, would a15w40 be too heavy for winter.... Walmart hasthemon sale for $25/case....... But Ill spend somemoreif I need to get the good stuff elsewhere.....

FRED:Actually I switched to the German 0w-30 Castrol forthe winter (as you can see when you read the entirethread I linked).

But M1 0w-40 will also make a fine winter or yeararound fill for our cars.

I would recommend against the "Valvoline All-Climate"as it does not produce consistent good results inNissan engines.

If I was you I would switch soon and then withDurablend 5w-30 or SynPower 5w-40.OR the syntec 0w-30 (be sure to follow direction on howto recognize it, as the old stuff syntec 0w-30is still around).

Run the durablend for only 1 oilchange, as it will getwarm enough over the next oil change after that one, to go backto M1 0w-40 or SynPower 5w-40.

If you find yourself in a real budget jam ,the cheapest(but still good) combo is ChevronSupreme 5w-30 (inwinter) and SuperTech ( walmart brand for $2.30, usethe ST 3600 it's slightly over size and fits perfecton a VH45DE).The Chevron is $1.14 at walmart and nearly as good asthe (also good) Durablend which is a buck more.

F..: )

PS: (This discussionw ould have been good on the board)

--------------------------------- Fred,I noticed you were staying with M1 0w40 over thewinter (or so yousaid), do you think that would be agood fill......? Right now, Ibelieve I am running avalvoline conventional (not my first choice, butohwell)...... Next oil change I may switch to thatdurablend, formaybe 2 oil changes, and see if itcleans things up, then switch tom1....

I am really illeterate when it comes to oil, so I dontknow whatsbest... Cost, and everything aside, whatwould you recommend to me... I want cleaning and goodlubrication...... I dont really care how longitlasts, as I pretty religiously change the oil at the90 dayinterval, rather than the 3000 miles.. Do youthink this is overkill, and id be fine waiting for my3000 miles??

Thanks again

Wes

Now, for the cliff notes since most of you didnt read all that (I wouldnt :D )

I simply asked Fred about what kind of winter oil I should run, and I want something with a bit more detergency because of my slightly dirtier engine. He recommended Durablend 5w-30 or SynPower 5w-40 OR the CASTROL syntec 0w-30..... As Q45tech has said, the oil filter doesnt really matter too much as long as you change the oil every 90 days!!!

Good stuff from our local oil guru... Oh, and BTW Fred this wasnt such a "quick" oil question was it..... ;)

Well I have another concern.... I have an unlimited supply of straight 30 weight oil.... is that stuff too thick for the Q...?

Id only run it for a few hundred miles, and the car would sit in a nice warm garage, and allowed to warm up sufficiently before I drove it....

If you only start your Q in a warmed garage and use it only for some straight up driving for your engine cleaning mission, then its ok.

In all other situations dont use straight weight oils.

Fred, you are correct.... It'll be run for 100 straight highway miles, and then the next day drained out and a full oil change done....

Just FYI...I just got back from Vegas. The Costco there had Mobil1 in both 10w-30 and 15w-50. The local store only has it in 10w-30. $23.99 a case.

Fred, can I mix the 2 together, say 50-50? I want something heavier than 10w-30, but I don't know if 15w-50 is too thick or not.

Yes and no.Unlike straight weight oils, the resulting viscosity from mixing 2 multi vis oils together is hard to estimate.

Luckily the 2 oils you mention need little or no, VII to achieve their multi viscosity character, so they are mixable and still predicatble and a 50/50 mixwould likely result in a thin 40 weight or thick 30 weight (at running temp) oil with a 10 or 15 w rating.

But if you desire a thick 30 weight, might as well try to see if your local Autozone carries the new german made ACEA A3 rated 0w-30 syntec, full PAO oil; 12,2 Cst at 100 C ( cut off for a 40 weight is 12.5).

Or go with the M1 0w-40 a good oil by all accounts not as extended drain capable as the 10w-30 or 15w-50 from M1 ,but a very good oil none the less.

A couple of other good oils SynPower in 5w-40 will give you a 40 weight syn oil ( albeit a group III), with an additive package I like. Also MIBIL1 is coming out with a "SUV" formula M1 5w-40, which will likely simply be a repakced MOBIL Delvac 5w-40 one the best MOBIL oils and a good oil in gasoline applications as well.

So there are many alternatives to mixing.

But the 2 oils you intend to mix will be ok, since both are low VII oils.
