Afternoon all,

I was fixing the motor on my right side door last night and I was trying to pull the car into the garage but noticed the clutch had a lot of free play to it. It went down about 1/3 of the way to the floor and then engaged. When I started out and let the clutch out I noticed it just started out on its own without me using the gas at all.

Once I had the window fixed I was pulling it out of the garage. What I noticed then was that it was sinking further to the floor everytime I engaged the clutch. By this time it was actually grinding into any gear I put it in. At the bottom of the driveway, it wouldn't even go into 1st gear for me to pull it up the driveway. The clutch was all the way to the floor, seemed all the way gone.

The question here is this. Is the clutch gone or could this be something different such as the master cylinder? Also, what's that going to run me if I do end up putting it together. The plan is to just sell the car, that's why I was fixing a few things but to fix it and only get $2,000 out of the car I am not sure if it's really worth fixing only to get the same amount of money for it.

All help is appreciated. I know this might be a repost but I am currently at work so I don't have time to go search and find everything.

Thank you.

Forgot to add a couple points here.

The car is a 91 240sx SE.

One other point here, the clutch as been acting funky for awhile. It was going down a couple inches for the last few months now but I thought nothing of it. I bought the car about 9 months ago from a guy that said he had replaced it. He redid a lot of things within the car so I figured so.

I had a few problems before with it going down far and not engaging but I had been driving another car recently so I parked it. When I got in and drove it for the last week or so it's driven fine. But last night it started doing it really bad until it would not even go into gear at all, I mean the clutch was stuck all the way to the floor.

Last thing is this. I let my stepdad drive it the other day (stupid me) and he didn't remember it had a clutch (lol don't even ask how this happened) and put the car into 1st without pushing the clutch in at all lol. Sadly, the car made a nasty sound and jumped off the ground. Died instantly and I'm thinking that possibly it did this. I started it one time since then to do the work I did and noticed nothing. Only last night it acted up.

Thank you for the help.

Check the actuator (master cylinder) on the passenger side of the transmission on the bell housing. make sure that's there. Basically, seems like there's no pressure. I've never heard of a clutch just going out so quickly like that. Stock right? It should smell like a dead rat if the clutch is dead. And it should have been slipping alot before it went out.

Yeah, the clutch doesn't slip at all. I smoked it once to where it smelled like that but I'm pretty good at telling what's wrong generally but never had this happen before so I got all worried about paying $800 bucks to get this crap fixed.

Thank you for all the help, it's a big relief.

Any ideas about the costs of the master cylinder?

I know the slave is quite a bit cheaper so I'm happy about that.

Thank you again, this has made my day.

Go ahead and replace the master and slave cylinders at the same time. The slave takes all of 10 minutes. Also remove the damper box to make bleeding easier. Total cost: 50 bucks at most. Thats what i did when my slave went out.
