They are unnesecary, but if they actually break off within the engine while its running it can cause some issues. Chunks of metal possibly being caught on the chain or somehow ending and messing up the cams and timing gears is bad.
Maybe you will get lucky like i did. When i went to change the upper chain guide it wasnt there and i thought it was already removed. Upon looking closer though i saw that it was broken, and there was still a piece of it under the screws that hold it on But yea, i got lucky and nothing seemed to happen.
I believe that the engine is an interference engine though, so if the chain snapped there might be a good chance the the pistons would have struck the cylinder head which equals a dead engine. Im not 100% sure so someone correct me if necessary.
And this is a KA right? I have no idea about SR's or CA's and whatnot.
