Today I started driving my 86 z31 a/t to go pick up my bro-in-law, I put the pedal to the floor, in overdrive, and the rpm's went up to 6k. The oil temp and pressure was right where it should be but the rpm's were way too high and it wouldn't shift to second. So I'm gonna be looking into putting in a m/t. I've heard a kit is required to convert. What would the kit include? All I'm thinking I would need is the mounts, clutch if it doesn't come with one, and the shifter. What would I be missing? How difficult is this conversion? How much money would I be putting in after purchasing the transmission?

Buy a smashed parts car and swap everything over. You will need the pedals, transmission, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, master and slave cylinders, driveshaft, plus all the hard and soft lines to make things feel happy. Plus the diff flange if you get the stuff from an 87+. I suggest a parts car because everything will be there and if you piece it together you might be halfway though and realize you forgot to get something. I say smashed parts car because it will be cheap and the damage won't likely affect any of the clutch/transmission components, while you might be able to part it after the conversion and recoup your money.

don't forget the clutch hard line, and I'm pretty sure all Z31's had the same pinion flange

Nope, the 84-86s had a square bolt pattern while the 87-89 have a rectangular one.

that sounds like a really good plan. tyvm. time to start savin and searchin. I think the problem is actually just first gear though. not the whole transmission. but that doesn't mean i'm just gonna get it fixed. I definitely want to convert. so the reason i think it's just first gear is when i put it to the floor in first the rpm's just keep going and it doesn't shift until i pull off of it, both when the engine and transmission are cold and hot. and when i'm in second gear gassing it, it'll auto down shift, obvoiusly, and it'll do the same thing. what do you guys think it is?

Unless your really attached to that car I'd just dump it and find a decent manual from someone. If your a good DIY'er then it is just your sweat and blood and I'm sure you can find a complete wrecker for cheap, but if you have the manual transmission out you should have it rebuilt before putting in a transmission out of a wrecking yard.

I had my transmission rebuilt twice in 25 years, they are for sure mostly worn out, the good news that any decent shop can rebuilt a manual, not the complexity of an auto....but unless your car is in really good shape I'd dump it and find a replacement or find a rebuilt auto, there is a alot of work to get the manny in there.
