So, as I posted here a few months back, my transmission had to be replaced. In August, my catalytic converter went bad. Now my muffler is shot and a piece of connecting pipe rusted off.

My husband wants me to get rid of the Camel because he thinks it is a money pit... I really can't come up with much to say otherwise... and we have a great chance to get rid of the Camel and take my dad's Volvo, but we have to decide before next week...

I hate this. I really like my V, but we already refinanced it to fix it - replacing the cat - and now we have to cough up more money to fix it again.

That being said... the Volvo is pretty sweet...

any thoughts?

Good to see you back from the dead.

How much have you spent on the car? If you like your car that much, I'd keep it unless you think there's another vehicle you like better.

I'm assuming from your other thread that the CVT was within the 120k warranty, so the main costs have been the catalytic converter and the muffler/tailpipe. I guess the thing to consider is whether if you keep the Camel you'll be spending anything close to what you'd spend to replace it. My last few cars have made it over 200k miles, and only at the end would it have been more expensive to repair than pay a new down payment plus monthly payments and increased insurance. (The reason I only got to 99k on the first Versa was that my son totaled his car and I sold him my Versa, which he's still driving.)

For the last six months I haven't been putting on the 36k miles per year that I had been doing, because my workplace closed down. But I still hope to keep this Versa through at least 200k miles. There's a possibility I'll be jumping to 70k miles per year, but I think if that opportunity comes up I may just get an apartment in that city and come home on weekends. But I just made a quick 350-mile trip this weekend and the Versa was sure happy to get out and run for a bit!

I say it's a good time to upgrade the exhaust system to a stainless steel one. Good as time as any.

Personally, if it were me I'd change it. If repairs are costly and there are more and more of them why go through the hassle? I had a ford before the Versa and spent probably almost as much as it was worth in repairs before the engine went. At that point I traded it just to be done with it. That being said I never had an issue with the Versa apart from some concern with the engine tapping. I actually got rid of my Versa recently and my insurance premium dropped when I got a Soul.
