I can smell burnt oil from under the hood... I am guessing that it is either a head gasket or something high on the engin, then it is dripping on the headers and burning. Has anyone else had this problem, maybe some help on what to check?

My father had an old for ranger and the valve covers leaked onto the headers, same smell... My girlfriend also noticed and asked me what it was (remember I have 100,000 on my G...)

Let's take a deep breath. First, I think you mean exhaust manifolds, not headers. By your signature, the only exhaust mod is the coupe mid-pipe.

You need to check your oil and coolant. If your head gasket did blow, you would see oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil. That would be a head gasket leak.

Most likely the problem is your valve covers are leaking, a faulty PVC valve, or your oil filter/plug not on tight causing a small leak. Wipe down the engine, and see if you can see where exactly the oil is leaking from.

your right, I do mean exhaust manifold. I checked the cap and it looked good. Haven't got a change to check the rest of the engine.

For reference, what is the difference between a header and an exhaust manifold as for as name goes. Are headers just tubular exhaust manifolds? From a functionality standpoint, they both connect the exhaust ports to the cats...

just ran out and checked, the dip-stick was out a little and it looks like it was coming from there... ha ha ha, lot of worrying for nothing.

Still curious about the header question though if anyone has a good answer...

I'm glad you found it...I forgot about the dipstick!

To answer your question, here is the difference between headers and stock exhaust manifolds.

An OEM "exhaust manifold" is usually a cast iron piece that combines all exhaust ports into a common chamber which is connected to the rest of the exhaust system. They are designed for cost effectiveness, not performance.

An aftermarket header, and some OEM designs on high end cars, use tubular ports directly connected to the exhaust port on the head. Each tube is routed to a common point, called a collector. The best use an "equal-length" design to maximize flow. (each tube is the same length so there isn't a vacuum created)
