I see what you did there: my gas tank is(was) literally screwed.

My camera is dead at the moment, so I didn't take any pictures of the adventure. Therefore, I'll try to explain.

I don't know who all has owned my car, but it seems every last one of them were dumbasses. The trunk area was covered in roofing tar patches and rotten indoor/outdoor carpet when I bought it. A battery box had been screwed to the floor with wood screws and a Honda battery had been thrown inside and shimmed up with 2X4's. Someone beat a hole through the spare tire recess with a screwdriver and ran the battery cable through with no bushing. They filled the quarter panels with great stuff foam and screwed 6X9 speakers to the rear side panels with wood screws.

Suffice to say, the car had been raped. I tried to undo the damage as much as possible and put the battery back up front. As it were, the car didn't run, so I didn't notice anything. When I finally got it running, it didn't take long to figure out something was up. Whenever I'd park it, it would smell like gas around the back.

Well, I finally got around to fixing it yesterday. We looked it over and saw what looked like a leaking seam. We dropped it, drained it, purged it with dry ice, and soldered the seam. LEAK TEST TIME! WOOOO HOOO!!! Oh hell no. whooooosh.... that had more holes in it. Pulled the rubber liner off the top, found 6 FREAKING HOLES!!!!

Someone had screwed through the floor of the trunk, through the rubber tank protector, and into the tank to install the battery box. I finally found the leak. Great... now what?

I said to hell with it, got some screws, screwed in the holes, and soldered around them. Pressure tested it again, everything was cherry. Got the tank back in, filled up again, car runs and doesn't smell like gas.

The moral? These cars attract dumbass owners as much as Civics do. And if I ever find out who installed this crap, I've got a plastic battery box they can shove up their arse.

For now. I think I will name this car the leech, based on its tendency to bleed me dry. I'm fixing the last of the big stuff in order to sell it.

I've got a better example in the driveway waiting for me. It's another rape victim. Someone decided that the car needed to have an identity crisis. Now it's a 93 chuki with a KA24E and a pignose. I think that with loving care and lots of counseling and therapy, I can make it feel loved again.

It's a bit of a mixed bag for me. While part of me wants to reward ingenuity, a larger part wants to clock someone upside the head for being a tard. If you can't take the time to figure out a way to do it without totally fudging up, why even bother?

The story goes that the PO got tired of blowing KA24DE-T's and decided to go with the cheaper KA24E-T. Unfortunately, the implementation was less simplistic than the idea. It ended up in pieces in a carport for over a year.

And where do I find them? Well, the two hatches in question found me, honestly. The one with the screwed gas tank found me when the PO kept bugging me to trade him my Del Sol's for the car and cash. Everyone makes mistakes... this was one of mine.

The pseudo-piggy was a parts car I heard about and got some parts from, but soon after stopped being a parts car. Later, I got a call out of the blue telling me to come get it, so I did.

Apparently, I just attract basket cases. So far, I've passed up another 2 hatches this year. One had been wrecked in the rear quarter, then had the damaged metal cut out leaving a big hole. The other had every body panel and window bashed with a baseball bat by someone's angry ex. A year or two ago, I almost got a piggy that had a big rat living inside it. I would have bought it, except I couldn't procure a trailer quick enough.

You meet some weird folks.

That really blows. Threadjack is no problem. I've already vented and subsequently sold the car to Ritsuzen.

For some reason, your story reminds me of one my friend told me tonight. He mentioned he was trying to drag race a S2000 at 1 AM in the 1939 Nash hot rod I sold him. He told me he launched hard and blew the 9" rear end to pieces (later determined he shredded all the teeth off the pinion gear). The S2000 left him there. Apparently, he attached a tow strap to the front and pulled the car a mile up a deserted highway to the nearest Wal-Mart. I suppose that's dedication, considering it was a mild uphill grade, and the car weighs nearly 4,000 lbs.

walmart bailed me out too on the repair, a few days later i mcguyvered some walmart ratchet straps to lift the tank up into place...later on i had a garage custom make some straps and bolt them into the stock holes. i actually passed inspection with those walmart straps too, i had like 2 feet leftover blue straps just tied up and stuffed up in random spots under the car, some hanging out.
