A while back, I purchased a Kel Tec PF-9.

I like it, for the most part. It is, however, built to a price point and it shows.

Frankly, I'd like to replace or supplement it with a better looking sub-compact. Or, I'm trying to justify purchasing a new CCW.

I've got a chubby for the CZ RAMI:

Similar guns are the Kahr family, the subcompact XD, the smaller Glocks, and maybe a really small 1911.

What else we got?

WAY too much, sexy as it may be.

Should have mentioned a budget: sub $600.

H&Ks are overly expensive for what they are (though they're pretty sweet). SIGs are expensive but even sweeter.

Basically, I'm looking for a "rat gun," bigger than a mouse gun, bigger than a pocket pistol (but not by much).

The Sigma? You're making a very bad joke.

I've ranted on while I'll never buy a S&W in previous threads.

Was quite unimpressed with the P99. Capacity for size is poor, and the thing is VERY jumpy. Plus, they're imported by S&W and no way in hell I'm sending them money. It's too big, anyway. The XD subcompact is as large as I'm looking for.

Millennium pro is a bit bulky.

9mm.

I'm guessing you're wanting something with a little more punch than a .380 eh? Because if not I'd suggest the Bersa Thunder, really awesome CC for the money.

I'd probably be torn between the Glock 26 subcompact or the CZ Rami. You need to go to a retailer that rents out.

I'd buy the P-3AT if I was looking for a .380 (and still might, seeing as they're TINY!). I've heard good things about the Bersa, too.

I honesty find most Glocks uncomfortable. If those turn out to be the choices, I'mma gettin' me a CZ!

You have no idea. I've been pretty nice about what I think of the PPK/S and the P99 because you've been personable with your advice, and I appreciate it and don't want to dog on your choices.

I wanna get a PF-9 and pocket sleeve for it.

the P3 is a tiny little pistol...

How about the PPS (brand new). Excellent size, 9mm (soon to be .40), less than an inch thick, even lighter than the PPK/S, and can be had for under 600. It is built a LOT better than most compacts on the market. I myself will probably get that or a Kahr in .40.

PPS is everything that's bad about the P99, but worse. Also S&W imports them, soooo...

thank god Ruger makes a solid revolver right?

I still wanna find a hard chrome PF-9 so I can have a pocket pistol in a decent caliber.

and cheap to shoot might I add.

I was checking out some Kahr's yesterday...I dunno...it's twice as a much as the Kel-tec for a polymer gun and not that impressive feel wise.

now if NAA would make a slightly bigger Guardian in 9mm, I'd so be on that.

I handled a .380 version and liked it. It's heavy to be in a pocket but feels very nice and looks good. They're similar to a Seecamp, the .32 and .25 Gaurdians are a licensed copy of the Seecamp.

there's always an AMT backup in .45ACP if you really hate your hands

Bersa Thunder 9mm?

Under $350 new, 17+1 capacity, lifetime warranty, and as far as I know a fairly reliable gun.

I'm going to look at a Bersa Thunder .380 sometime this week for CC. I'm having a hard time finding anything but good reviews on the web.

I know 9mm beats .380 hands down, but I have a P89 and I want something I can conceal in summer clothes.

How much do those Bersa's go for? Just out of curiousity, I just now read some nice reviews about them. What brand ammo do you guys shoot? my 1911 jams like crazy when I shoot CCI, but it loves Remington ammo.

If you think a Kel-tec is built to too low a price point then I doubt you'll like the Bersa. Thats more of a buy illegally, then plant on the body of the guy who broke in to your house kinda gun. On the other side of the coin, I've never actually fired one, and some people love em.

I shoot Cor-Bon in everything but my .32 Browning 1903. It simply WILL NOT feed the short Cor-Bon JHPs. It gets Gold Dots.

About once a month.

But I make machinegun noises while aiming my wiener whenever I'm pissing alone.

So I'm not the only one looking for a new s/c pistol. I'll share some of my notes with you...

Beretta Px4 Storm s/c

Sig P232

Walther PPSWalther P99 s/cWalther PPK

I feel that the Storm is a bit bulky to be classified as a true s/c, but its a nice gun. The P232 is too bulky for just being a .380. The PPS is good, but its DAO so I crossed it off the list. The PPS mag is also a single stack and the P99 s/c is just a bit bigger but has a higher capacity double stacked mag and is available in a variety of actions. I've briefly looked at the ParaOrd SlimHawg but didn't like it. I have the word of a couple of friends and a host of online posts that have had more than their fair share of customer service problems with Kahr - last thing I need to have from someone I plan on giving money to. I don't know much about the Micro Eagle other than its based on a Czech design from a company called ZVI and that it looks ugly and beautiful at the same time - a lot like the A-10 Thunderbolt II. Its supposed to retail for around $550

For me its down to the P99 s/c and a model not available yet (that I know of), the Sig P238 - which is what knocked the PPK off my list. The P238 is a single stack, single action .380 in the spirit of the old Cold Mustang. Search for the Sig and you can find some stuff on it. If you're a 1911 fan you'll be familiar (and probably comfortable) carrying concealed with a weapon in Condition One. The P99 s/c (and the PPS) are in the $700 range - the P99 closer to $800 and I recall seeing the P238 at a bit over $500. I know you're looking to keep costs down, but if its a personal defense / carry piece I don't think money should be your highest priority.

I've always valued placement over calibre which makes the P238 and its .380 rounds a contender for daily wear. Plus concealability is far more important for me than having high cap large calibre piece that never gets carried either due to concealment or comfort issues.

You actually WANT it to be a cheap weapon because when you shoot someone with it, it WILL be confiscated and you probably won't see it for quite some time. But whatever makes you feel comfortable...

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of times that buyers pay for a name, but I also know that quality usually doesn't come cheap. Forget Jennings, you should buy a cheap S&W. I won't buy from them for the same reason you won't. Which makes me so torn about purchasing a Walther.

In any case, I did some looking around yesterday and the P238 is indeed now on the Sigarms website. Its not in the Pistols section, instead you have to go to the new products section and click on the thumbnail.

It comes in under your $600 mark, the Nitron coated with night sites runs $572 - not counting any dealer gouging...err, markup.

I live in a "Stand Your Ground" state, as does Charlieo, consequently I don't concern myself too much about the potential after-action fallout. You however, live in a state that doesn't even have a Castle Law on the books, so I can see where you're coming from. So, sorry but, I don't want it to be a cheap weapon. But never mistake inexpensive for cheap, they are vastly different. If it comes down to it I'd rather be without a weapon for a while than my life permanently.
