Hi Everyone. Wanted to share my recent experience post maintenance on an M35x with 88,000KMS. The Infiniti dealership recommended a few maintenance items on the car such as Fuel system service, 4 Wheel Alignment service and the Throttle Body service. Knowning a thing or two about cars I asked what the TB service entailed. They said a cleaning of the intake system and recalibration of the DBW (Drive By Wire) system. I thought for a while and decided to go ahead.

I can only assume that it was the TB service that made the difference. Throttle response was improved greatly and can feel a much stronger pull from start right through the power band. It cost me $125CAN and was worth every penny.

Hope this info comes in handy. It would be a good idea for someone who knows how to do it to post a how-to on calibrating the TB.

Cheers everyone

Is the TB service part of the 60K service? 80K service? Or did the dealer just threw that service in there as a recommendation to improve the performance of the car?

Isn't the TB service the same as a fuel injector service? or changing out the fuel filter on the M?

Honestly I am not sure which mileage interval that service is performed. It was a recommendation by the service manager. It's possible that it's included in one of the major milestone service plans. It would be good to know.

Cheers,M

EDIT - I just checked the maintenance intervals right up to 100k miles and no mention. It's definitely recommended and I did it at 88,000km so go for it. Biggest bang for my buck

No it's not part of the FI service.

Just double checked my invoice. The Throttle body service was an Idle adjustment. It was the fuel system service that stated increase performance and economy. Regardless do the two together and I'm sure you'll be in for a treat

The Fuel system service cost $169 CAN and the TB idle adjustment cost $119.

Sorry for misleading you guys a bit.

I'll start a separate thread for the M45 guys with pics - but I did this service to the V8 and it woke up the engine dramatically minus the fuel system treatment plus NGK Iridium IX plugs and an Oil Catch Can.

Runs better than it ever has since I've owned the car

^^I am curious to see what you have done, especially regarding the catch can on your M. Although not very attractive they work.

Nothing wakes these cars with 60+k (very dependent on the individual vehicle) on it like a thorough top end cleaning.

Recently I have been recommending removing the entire plenum and cleaning it correctly. Instead of spraying something in one port or infront of the throttle to chemically remove any sludge or oil that gets into the intake tract under normal operation. However I don't like to push my luck with catalytic converters altering the AF ratio to the point that a throttle service typically does can cause a flooding condition and saturate the catalyst material that can cause long term damage.

The 1 hour labor to reset your Idle Air Volume and Self Learning is excessive IMHO. They charged you almost $300 for an induction service. :tisk

Although at any price having you (the owner) satisified is worth it. However I hate to see members get burned on things.

"reset your...Self Learning"AND "recalibration of the DBW (Drive By Wire) system"

Are these two things referring to how the car learns the way you drive, and how it responds to your pressing the accelerator? (If this car even does those things)

I know on some cars in the past (BMW) you could reset this with some combination...something like pressing the accelerator repeatedly, while turning the ignition on and off and rubbing your stomach while patting your head...kinda thing.

What would be the steps and items needed to perform this ourselves

I purchased my M with 57,000 and I'm getting very close to 60k

Anything else I should be doing at this stage?

So far got my filters done, transmission flush, differential and ran a can of bg44k

Thanks in advance

Pics are uploading as we speak - but I must warn you there's nothing high tech about what I did.

I do TB cleaning every 2 years. But for DIYs with 03-04 M45, when you do TB cleaning and/or disconnected the Throttle Motor Actuator you will probably get an SES light with DTC P0507-Idle Speed Control problem. This code is triggered when the Idle Speed is 25 RPM more than the target speed. This is a known issue in ALL 2002-2005 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. I got this code on my 03Q45 after TB and MAF sensor cleaning. The only difference this time is that I disconnected the Throttle Motor Actuator connector for cleaning too. During IAVL (Idle Air Volume Learning) the lowest I can get was 750 RPM (vs. spec of 650 +/- 50RPM). Both PCV valves are good and there is no vacuum leak in the air intake duct.

I just downloaded the TSB, ITB05-042, and will use it to fix this problem. If not, then I have to take the car to the dealership for ECM reprogramming (per TSB recommendation).
