Post

Hi, Sorry for the annoying introduction post title!

My name is John, I'm 24, I own a stock 240 i bought from a white collar worker in Fresno, Ca. it had 111.5k miles when I found it, it now has 114.5k. (*edit* I have records of the whole time this guy had the car since 99'.... including windshield wiper changes... 0.o :chuckle: )
It had a cheap strut bar up front and a totally 90's 12 disc changer that was water damaged in the trunk.
Only things Ive done to this car :
1. Smog it (barely passed.... with Seafoam.)
4. Change the head unit on the stereo (basic aux port best buy find)(~$80?)
3. change the oil (2 times)
4. put tires on the back 2 wheels
5. Failed smog (last week)(because California changed their emissions standards...)

What I'm doing now?
1. Drooling at your set ups.
2. Reading reading reading.
3. Realizing how much of a NUB I am. (brakes, oil, battery, valve cover gaskets, bolt-ons, i've done in the past and can handle... Fab, tuning, battery relocation, turbos? uber nub.)
4. Not quitting.

Plans?
1. Register in Texas, (since im military i can get out of emissions tests since im stationed away from home)
2. KA-T. ( *edit* t28 setup for mid range power deliverance)
3. Any steps you would suggest between 1 and 2.

And........ GO.

(feel free to laugh at my nubness)

Words I (try to) live by?

Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
(Proverbs 16:19)

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
(Proverbs 27:2)

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
(Proverbs 29:23)

Jeez, please don't be shy! All I'm asking is what your preference of steps to greatness on a car on a low budget would be?

Wheels first? id like work meister s1 replicas if i could find them!
suspension?
drivetrain?
fuel management?
cooling?

welcome. id start with making car run 100%, then suspension, then wheels, then drivetrain, then get the body like you like it, then get the engine running better....and better........and better.

thanks for the reply.

gotta say boot camp changes you...

i kinda have an eye for things that look wrong and um... well..

i have a hose thats cracked. it goes to my valve cover.... can i just get any similar sized hose and cut it to the right length?

should i go to o'reilleys or kragen's and ask for it?

are there full hose kits readily available so i can just change all my air-related hoses at once?

just get some heater hose the right size. will work fine for a vent hose. dont worry about a "full hose kit", just get a bunch of vac hose, and replace one at a time. dont know what you mean but having an eye for things that look wrong. you go h0m0 while you were in boot camp?

Welcome to the forum and the service. Hooyah, Oorah, Hooah, or whatever the Chair Force says, as it applies. Just ribbing you about the Chair Force. :)
That being said, here goes...
First: Get everything on your new girl good to go. If she leaks, plug it. If she smokes, track it down. If she's dirty, deep clean her. Make her perform and look like she just rolled off the showroom floor. This will give you an excellent blank canvas.
Second: Figure out what this car is for. Is she a drifter? A dragster? A show car? A spirited daily driver? Are you planning on entering competitions? Do you want to get much tail and many tickets? Do you just want to have fun getting from home to work as quickly as possible?
Third: Name your new girl. With a girls name. Something that fits her personality and yours. It's a little psychological trick the military has been using for generations. If you name something, you form a bond with it (her), and will pay extra close attention.
Fourth: Once you've completed steps 1-3, start browsing this site (and others) for parts lists, parts reviews and writeups for whatever you plan to do. USE THE SEARCH BUTTON! USE THE SEARCH BUTTON! USE THE SEARCH BUTTON! This forum is a veritable cornucopia of information. Don't be afraid to ask any questions, but search first.
Fifth: Once you've compiled a complete list of EVERYTHING you need to turn your girl into whatever you want the final project to be, prioritize that list by what you want to complete first, by system. Example: Suspension, engine rebuild, engine turbo, body kit, paint, new sound system.....
Sixth: Do not go cheap on these parts. Save your money (DO NOT GO INTO DEBT TO FUND THIS PROJECT ie credit card) and slowly gather quality parts. Ebay is cheaper for a reason. Occasionally you luck out and get an incredible deal on quality parts, but usually its like playing russian roulette with a shotgun. I'm taking a wild shot in the dark and saying you're between E-1 and E-3. I know exactly how much (or rather, how little) we make, so go easy. As long as your girl is reliable, everything else can take its time. Deployments are a great way to save money. Set aside a certain, affordable amount of your paycheck as your "repair fund". Once you have about $1000 set aside, LEAVE IT ALONE, and start another piggy bank with the same concept, call it a "modification fund".
If it sounds like I'm lecturing, I'm trying not too. I've had too many of my junior guys get into a hole because they blew all their money on a turbo kit, left no money for gas or food, and then blew up their motor, leaving them with absolutely nothing. I've been doing this for 10 years now, and have done the same thing back in the day. All this is my standard "Just got out of boot" training. Take notes and pass it on when you get guys under you. ;)
All that being said, I would recommend your first modification (after all cleaning and repairs are done) would be suspension. The KA is a capable motor, and a decent suspension setup is the easiest and cheapest way to get that power to the ground. Some chassis stiffening bars will help too.
If you plan to turbo, the safest way is to pick up a KA somewhere, completely rebuild it, and turbo it while its on the engine stand.
If you have MWR hobby shop facilities available, I highly recommend using them. Get in good with the people who run the shop, and the advice and tools will come flowing. I bribe the manager with a case of redbull when I go in, gets me a couple free hours of lift time.
Ok, that's all I have for now. Feel free to pester me with questions, or tell me to butt out. :)
Good luck, and take lots of pics!

Oh, and don't underestimate the power of brakes. It's more important to be able to stop quickly than it is to be able to go quickly. ESPECIALLY if you can already go quickly.

ATAN Ferris, John.
NAS Lemoore.
Hooyah.

I liked how you Hooyah'd first.
You sure said it.
Now the trick is to not spend so much money worrying about when my fiance visits, or when i take leave. Problem with being so selfless? No money goes to your baby (car).
BUT! People tend to appreciate you more, so thats a good trade off.

Anyways i have reviewed your post and you have seriously changed my outlook on this whole process....

its just... wow what a daunting task before me

Ever feel like a man, standing at the foot of a mountain, realising whats ahead and the pain along the path to the top, where all the glory is to be had?

Thats exactly how I feel.

Pics of the ride will be up soon, and good call with the name thing... I've had her since March and still havent named the beautiful girl.

About time isn't it?

:woot: Been waiting 8 years for a 240, found one with a straight body and low milage. :woot:

ack, friggin airdales. Come below the surface, where the real men are. HOOYAH BUBBLEHEADS!
As to your fiance and your leave periods, search "why cars are better than wives" and take a read. two words: PRE NUP.
As to the mountain, there are well worn paths up the side, all the way to the top. You just gotta keep going, suck it up, and get to it. TOTALLY WORTH IT. For inspiration, there is a sticky at the top of the general discussion threads, page 1, the official table of build threads. Browse through there if you find yourself flagging.
Good luck, and drop me a line if you need help with anything.

Everybody hates the 4x4 suspension but if my car was not 4x4 I would have had a lot of damage when it slid off a lift it was being drivin up on to, the suspension was just high enough for the frame to clear the deck of the lift and not get damaged so ya sometime it is a good thing. Sorry OP for the little thread jack but ya try and do what sandcrab said just get her clean and new then mod her up, oh and about the name thing it really does create a bond I named mine not to long after I got her and have been in love ever since. :dblthumb:

A decent compromise I've seen on some, including the mouseattack.org v8 conversions is to NOT lower her, but to size up the wheel/tire combo to fill the tire wells. I plan to do something similar. Check out the site, and look up 24 hour v8 240sx on youtube, its impressive.
