Hello My fellow Q brothers,

I am sorry to say that I no longer am the owner of the my black on tan 1990 infiniti Q45. I traded the Q in over the weekend due to the string of problem I've had with the vehicle. I owned my Q for 16 months and replaced the following items. New computer, radiator, fuel pump, 2 starters, 2 alternators 2 front rotors, 2 sets of brakes and a transmission, not counting the string of electrical problems. I loved my car but could not keep it because of all the problems. I want to thank all of you for your assistance.

Strange: we have only replaced 2 starters in 6 years of business on over 1,000 Q.Now aftermarket rebuilt alternators fail by the gross vs factory which last 100k or 200k....cheapo battery will take them out in a week!Same with ecu they just don't fail without the help of a poor technican or some external cause.

Sorry to see you go but each of us have our own tolerance levels

and $7,000 plus in 16 months is almost as bad as the $7,000 I spent in 12 months [1998] but I drove 33,000 miles during the period....21 cents per mile was scarey but it dropped after that to only 15 cents!

dear 278Q45:

I am very sorry you wish to leave your car.Are you sure it is wise to rade-into a car into which you put a new transmission?Since you wil get so little for it in trade-in.It has basically stopped depreciating so why not keep it

When I buy my next car ( a 2-3 year used G35 or M45 or Q45) in 2-3 years I will keep this car as a second one.

Fred...:)

I've gotta agree with Fred on this one.

I've been in the exact same boat as you are, bought the car, replaced the transmission a few weeks later. Then found Dennis and T3 and spent $$$ getting everything right only to loose the motor in a freak bearing problem (Yes, I'm a strict 3,500 Mi, synth. oil guy) and replaced it with a Japanese takeout. (it really sucked to replace a motor after spending all the money for flushes, guides, preventative maint. etc)

I understand how you feel, but the best option is not to be too emotional, try and think in financial terms. (Not like it matters now, you already traded the car)

It's hard to justify spending more money to keep fixing problems, but at some point things smooth out and stay together for a while to help recoup the $$$ spent. Personally, I doubt I'd put another 5K in mine, but I must say it's been a good couple of years with no major mechanicals to speak of.

So what did you replace it with?I'd replace mine, but I have yet to find anything that compares in the same price range.

Sounds like you picked up the car on life support and didn't have health insurance (a decent repair shop). Since so many things were replaced twice I'm wondering if whoever worked on the car was even halfway qualified to do so.

I've "learned my lesson" about buying older lux cars... but would I do it again? SURE!! Just have to learn to be picky and ask LOTS of questions prior to purchase.

Plenum hoses, 120k service, oxygen sensors, driveshaft, new shocks and boots, two sets of tires, all brakes, sunroof rail replacement, upper links, tension rods, all new bushings, oil pressure sender, rear diff bushings, 2 lower traverse arms,, one lower link arm, one rear camber arm and new eccentrics, and radio R&R.................the next 12 months were down to $5,800, then $4,000 then $3500 so $20,300 in only 4 years the last year thru June was around $3,000 but that included the $600 I paid for half a wrecked 92 Q.

So $23,300 for 138,000 miles is only 16.8 cents a mile but I have roughly $2,000 in spares in storage.....summing it all up around $34,000 since June of 1990 about $2750 per year give or take

Last year [June 2001-May 2002] I changed the differential, rear subframe, and two bearings and 2 hubs that was $1500 alone [$4,000 at retail pricing].This year June 2002 -- $600 bought an almost new transmission, a new compressor, new dryer, new condenser, new battery, 2 new headlights, an entire dash, all electronic modules, $1,000s of misc items.

Somewhere back in history was the custom all aluminum radiator [Summer 1999? 160k] that was 78,000 miles ago.

Lots of things on the car should last another 100,000 miles. {will the engine make it to 338k? My orginal plan was only to get to 250k only 12k to go.

I sure many have gotten close to 200k and not spent half but mechanically I am a perfectionist!......body and interior is another matter!.

Now that I am only driving 15,000 miles a year things don't seem to wear out!

For the last 15 months I have been buying parts from junk yards or wrecks but I 'm sure I'll have to pony up to the dealer trough in the next 9 months.Found a set of front Metal Master brake pads for $32 will need new rear rotors by Xmas. New plugs in 22,000 miles ......flushed the powersteering pump/rack system today it is the oldest rotating item that hasn't been opened/replaced at 238,000 miles

My first Q 91 Touring I never had to replace the starter.for that matter I've never had to replace the starter on any of the INfiniti's ( 4 now) .brakes and tires were and still are the major items that keep needing replacement..Also replace transmission twice in 240,000 miles. MY 4th Q a 92 that I converted from Active is nice..Biggest noticeable difference in performance was after I upgraded the ECU and then changed plugs and O2 sensors....The 4:08 diff is nice and compliments the ECU TCU upgrades.Playing around with a couple of 300ZX TT now since I haven't been able to get a supercharger for the Q.....:thumbup
