I think a jew is electable, and very swiftly we will see women electable, BUT, a jewish woman, that may be a bit too much all at once for America. I have no problem with either characteristic, but then i'm only a small sample of America

helped deliver, not delivered. there is a difference in meaning. i think that a degree of it did help elect him, as the right likes to say "hopey changey." but that doesnt explain his appeal which is across color, age, and ethnic lines. not everyone voted for him cause he was black, and they were black too.

just remember, the difference between giffords as a candidate 2 weeks ago and today, is a single bullet. thats grotesque.

Can I weigh in? I don't think a Jew will be elected, for the simple fact that anyone who's Jewish enough to be noticed as Jew must be someone brave and outspoken enough not to hide it. President Obama resorted to dressing and moving like this in order to make us forget that he's black:

Maybe in twenty years, but not before. This is a pretty reasonable bunch here on the internet, but I think we all realize that I'm saying that with the implication that I'm comparing this bunch to another.

Re: Abraham Lincoln
I caught that rumor as it wandered through my synagogue back home. It's a nifty thought, and the fact that his roots are sufficiently obscure and that he was relative areligious in office suggest to me that, even if he weren't Jewish, he's the closest thing we'll get to a Jew in the Oval Office for quite some time.

Re: Obama & the Black Vote

Didn't exit polling suggest that Obama got 92% of the black vote? And didn't Al Gore get 95%?

Whatever.

We got a Black Muslim. ;)

We almost had a wimminz. And 60 years ago, we elected a Catholic. An IRISH CATHOLIC.

Of course, you're too young to get the significance of that, but that was NOT a well-liked demographic by the voters of the time.

I'm well-aware of why he was elected.

Trust me, we saw a rerun of it in 2008. :)

Black people don't play baseball or wear White Sox gear? :gotme Almost every POTUS since 1910 has thrown out at least one MLB first pitch. I can imagine the President was quite honored to participate.

He's no Bo Jackson.

Obama's natural movements have that unmistakably lanky form when he plays basketball and golf, as well. I've had skilled and successful teammates in several different sports with that type of physique. B.O. works well with his form and most notably plays the game of basketball at a decently high level.

Anyways... that post was just an excuse to talk sports. :bigthumb: Not meaning to disagree with your core point, in which Obama does a great job of controlling the racial perception from all perspectives.

Not agreeing with OP's Giffords forecast, but you never know.

I agree that for most people the obvious decision would be to retire from politics and spend her life with her family. But you have to understand that a politician is inherently different.. They have already made the decision to invest their life into public service, so she is most likely inclined to be a public servant. Will then event in her life change her mind about that? It very well might. It sure would change my mind. But, perhaps for someone who was previously inclined to give their life to public service, the opportunity to reach the highest level of that field might be very tempting.

Those that wear white sox gear don't wear windbreakers and granny jeans. Those that play baseball don't throw like that. It was a joke, making fun of President Obama's whiteness when it came to that first pitch throw.
