just today at the parking lot of a grocery store, i noticed that my right rear side looked higher than the left.

the surface was flat, and i measured with my hand and stuck it between the wheelwell and the top of the tire on both sides.

on the right side, my whole hand could fit, whereas on the left only 3 fingers could fit in.

does this mean tokico blue time?

i tried pushing the car down for bounce to check it old school style, but they are stiff as hell.

i looked by the springs and no leak of any kind.

is there other way to check this?

Did you have any steering cranked in? If the front wheels were turned significantly that would lean the car over and effect the rear height side to side. Worn shocks have very little effect on ride height.

no, the steering was straight. what else could it be?

did you leave your bowling balls in the driver's side corner of the trunk again? how many times do i....

but, seriously, the only way it could be the strut is if it somehow was siezed in one position. never heard of this happening, but that would explain you not being able to the the "old school bounce check". You should definitley be able to depress that corner of the car an inch or two (unless you are a woman..), or unless that strut is somehow locked up... try pushing down the other corners for comparison.

eswifti dont bowl, but seriously i will try that push down technique again.

thats a good question, how many women are in this forum i wonder.

is there any woman member here?

The Q rear springs are 123 inch pounds [no sway bar] and the fronts are 146 [plus some variable for sway bar 50-150 extra]. Shocks are measured at a SAE standard rate 0.3 meters per second [rear 185-251 restistive pounds in expansion]...[44-77 pounds in compression].......since the shock has a total range of 7" unmounted..........mounted and loaded correctly say 3.25" up and down]

Very few human beings are strong enough to check springs and shocks because you have to PULL the side UP 3" in less than a 0.3 seconds then push down 3 " in the next 0.3 seconds.

See they start brand new at 251 then progressively decline to 185 by 50,000 miles when they are worn out of spec.Best rule of thumb is to just change them every 4 years or so.

By the time they leak they have been worn out for years.

A ha! thanks Q45 tech,

it seemed like you had to be 6 million dollar man to push that down.

well sure, you can model a pothole like SAE says by an impulse function, to see if they are "in spec." .... but we dont need an SAE test in this case, i think it is clear that they are definitley out of spec, simply by LaQ's initial inspection.

Members seem to miss that the expansion resistance has to be 2-3 times stiffer than the compression resistance.

So why would you push down [the weaker direction] to test shocks...........you must lift up and with [1050-900] pounds per corner.

The nitrogen pressure is minor [to keep the oil from foaming in heat and high frequency operation].............doubt worn or new shocks could affect ride height by 1/4" front -1/2" rear.

Springs must be tested [hard to find a test machine] or just replaced with new, you can't trust high mileage junkyard springs as to EXACT stiffness after 100,000 miles.

1/2" difference in wheel well height shouldn't make much difference except that each shock will have a different stroke length since the oem springs are linear in rate.

When I lowered mine [180k - 4 years ago] it was interesting that the new Eibach springs came out almost perfect side to side and across...............obviously all springs have a finite life.

q45 techi read some posts in the past about tokico blues and blacks and other suspension q's.

what would be the basic update for 92 q besides changing the struts? also i heard that blues are stiffer than blacks? i am not a big fan of stiff suspension(had a vette for a while, terrible ride), so should i go with black tokicos?

The Blue HP series are about 10 - 13% stiffer in compression and 18 -25% stiffer in rebound [depends on shock body temperature] than oem primarily designed for those that want a less than luxurious ride [more roll control in transition with stock springs].

A must for those that use Eibach lowering springs.

To me the best of both worlds is blues on rear and blacks on front even with stock springs.

Many buy the blues because they are less expensive on the web than oem blacks. Both colors are pretty well beat stiffness wise at 60,000 miles - even though the blues have a lifetime anti leak warranty, which is essentially worthless.
