Today i got around to pulling the oil pan off of this SR20DET, i bought it for $400 without harness and transmission. I did hear it run and it had what sounded like a rod knock or bearing issue. So inside the pan i noticed little sharp objects, but the strange part is their not metal (i think so anyway). their are little black chunks that are sharp as hell and look like they have been chewed up. So i pulled the girdle and immediately noticed that it was chewed up.

Then i continued to pull the rods and the main bearings out, this is were things get weird. I pull the first main, crank looks great, no grooves, just some minor scuffing. Second main looks good too, bearing had some minor grooving, but the crank looked great. Third looked really good on both bearing and crank, fourth also looked awesome and both bearing and crank. The 5th as well looked good, at this point i begin to think its the rod bearing that had a failure.

So once again i pulled all four rod caps and everything looked great, no grooves, just some minor scuffing, i had a friends dad come take a look and he said everything looks normal (btw hes like a thousand years old and has been messing around with cars for sometime now) Can anybody tell me what could possibly cause the noise i was hearing, what were those black chunks that i found in the pan?

The sound was similar to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68U-8-ry ... r_embedded

chunks of black chewed up stuff:

#1 are cracks, and #2 are chew marks, this is the girdle btw:

WTF is this dinosaur thing?:

these marks aren't limited to the areas photographed, the whole girdle is covered in chew marks and cracks.

Probably ring debris, or wear. any cam or head damage. Are you going to have this block bored? I would even at .020 over with a stock set up if your on a budget. Also have the crank journals polished and the new bearings clearance checked. I would replace that gurdle thing (not an SR20 guy).

The rings are fine, all the plugs also looked fine. Everything in the head is new, they replaced it all besides the valves in hopes of finding the noise. The engine ran good, it pulled hard even with the ticking. The guy drove it 50 miles non stop when he first got it. Im thinking its the chain tensioner, the bearings looked like they had some miles on them. So im assuming the tensioners are original, i haven't gotten that far yet so i will post when i pull the front cover off. Either way its getting a full rebuild, i had a $2500 budget and ive only spent $400 and have gotten almost everything i need to do the swap :badger :badger :badger

look up how to bleed the lifters this usually causes ticks or rocker arms to cause that noise. Pop open the valve cover

Their all good, even then, it doesn't explain the little black chunks i found all over the place. I'm gonna rebuild it, I'll post what i find.
