Here's my CA history..
I got the motorset for $300. The engine has been rebuilt. When I got it, the head still needed to be torqued and the manifolds were off. The exhaust manifold, water pump, and clutch had been parted out. A new water pump was included but it isn't the one that centers the pulley correctly.
I got the engine together and bought the missing parts. Got it installed and did all the wiring as per this:
http://www.frsport.com/SR20DET....htmlI took the KA MAF plug and connected it right beside the CA Plug so I could use my MAF now and the CA maf would be simple to install when the time comes.
It started quickly and idled *okay*. It was pretty much pouring oil out the side of the oil pump so I turned it off. I took off the alternator and found where it was coming from. It looks like the oil pump gasket had been cracked apart (and probably broken) and then put back on. Needless to say, I was pretty steamed. The next day I pulled the pump off and replaced the gasket, then realized I wouldn't be able to reseal the oil pan without taking it off so I pulled the engine out and put the oil pan back on. I put it back in and started it.
It still idled the same. Then it just died. Just died. Died. I took off the CAS and the little alignment jig thingy wasn't on it anymore. I pulled it out, took it apart and modified it to work again.
Still idles half-crappy. Finally got to take it for a drive. It seems to me like the MAF or TPS is wired backwards or something. After the drive, it wouldnt' even idle without the CAS all the way advanced. If I take it to what seems to be around 4000 (I don't have a tach) it runs perfect til about 75% or so throttle. Anywhere below that, I have to baby it to even get moving. Full throttle, just hiccups and after-fires and possibly backfires (sounds like compressor surge.)
I installed my narrow-band A/F gauge left over from my KA-T and it said it ran lean when it did this hiccup stuff. I thought it might need more fuel since the KA MAF has a different map. i put in some DSM 450cc injectors to see if maybe... Didn't change anything.
After a while, there developed an exhaust leak between the turbo and outlet elbow. I looked in and saw that the gaskets had pretty much burned up and the bolts fell out. (this is after about 5 miles of 'experimental' driving.) I tried to tighten the top bolt and it stripped. Luckily, I bought an extra turbo.
I took off my turbo and manifold and swapped. Sometime while the Earl's feed line was sitting next to me on the ground, I must have stepped on it or kicked it or something and it had a kink. I gently bent it straight again and put everything back together. It still ran the same but now it was dripping oil out of the line.
I'm pretty flustered at this engine. I know I did some stuff wrong (adjusted timing without a timing light, bigger injectors without management etc...) but I feel like I did all of it for a good reason. I've been lurking the forum for a few weeks and have learned quite a bit, but I still need help.
