I have a '90 240 SX, 165,XXX miles. When I drive on the freeway after about an hour, I get this very loud clicking noise coming from what sounds like the top of my engine. This will happen on older oil (1500 miles +), and hyper lube or some other additive seems to help/delay it. It is very annoying and has been doing it for about 2 years now, but it's getting worse. It used to just sound like 1 "click" per rev, now it sounds like it has 3 "clicks" per rev...I think I have marbles rolling around, lol. Also, when my cars first starts up in the mornings, sometimes the oil pressure light flickers on and off, even when I know it's full. Could this be part of the problem?? The clicking doesn't effect the way my car runs at all, and everything else seems to be normal. Any insight to this problem will be much appreciated. I don't want my car to explode!! Thanks fellas.

check to make sure you arent running low on oil. i know next to nothing about that specific engine, but it sounds like you are experiencing some lifter tapping.

the fact that the noise might be from oil starvation at the top of the engine, and that your oil pressure is lacking, might be an indicator that your oil pump is either failing or has somehow become less effiecient that an up to spec one.

My thoughts were oil pump also, is that tough to swap out? I'm pretty good on cars, just american ones:) Now where did I put the Haynes manual....Thanks for the reply.

I had the same problem with my 240. What I did was take the valve cover off and found the timing chain guard had broken off and was tapping against the cover making a loud knocking sound. That was caused by all the timing chain slapping which was fixed by replacing the timing chain's top tensioner. I didn't replace the guard because it's not necessary. Hope that helps.

Could also be the LIFTERS tapping. Mine does it alot. Look around for a set of low miles ones to buy cheap since there not cheap new.
