Anyone who has any mac knowledge, I just bought a G4, and osX is notorious for being suceptible to viruses. What's the best software to gaurd against this? I really don't want to see a $3200 computer take a crap on me. Thanks for the help.

1. You shouldn't have bought a Mac in the first place :)

2. Just get ZoneAlarm or some other firewall and don't open every little e-mail you get and you'll be fine.

You may think Macs are cool, but I can only dream about the kick-@$$ PC I could've built with $3200 bucks. Can anyone else say server?

Anyway, ZoneAlarm is a VERY good program and will keep viruses out of your system. Do not download anything even resembling Norton or McAfee. Those guys not only take over your computer but they also hardly ever stop viruses.

As for the games question, http://www.gogamer.com has some great deals on Mac video games as well as PC.

You guys are all on crack. If I had wanted a computer for video games or maybe a glorified word processor, I would have gone with a PC. However since this machine is primarily for graphics/design, Mac is the only way to go. Photoshop, illustrator, that sort of thing. Doing design work on a PC is like a fat man running a marathon. You can, but I wouldn't reccommend it. And for the record, NOTHING sucks like windows XP. And by owning a Mac, I don't have to worship at the temple of his wondrous emminance, the exhalted BILL GATES

I'm not one of those PC haters, but my girl has a Sony Vaio running XP, and we both start cussing at it on a regular basis. Hell, could be operator error. As far as running more than one OS, maybe you're talking about something different, because osX.2 (jaguar) will run osX and os9 simultaneously. Besides, If you build the greates PC in the world for under 20bucks, you still can't change one simple fact....... Bill Gates is the DEVIL.

YOu can run Linux (some) on Macs.

Back to your questions though..Why dont you call Apple up and ask them what they recommend?

Uh-oh someone (probably was me) started it. The classic "PC's suck...no...Macs suck" argument. Let me start out by saying that I have worked with both for over 12 years. That being said, I have to say that PC's are better in most all aspects ESPECIALLY graphics/design. Whoa!!! Everyone is thinking, "Did he just say that? and did he mean it?" Yes i did...and i did. First of all, how many times have you Mac users fired up Photoshop and tried to run Pagemaker/Quark/InDesign at the same time? Chances are most of you haven't or haven't much because 9 times out of 10 you don't sufficient memory. How many PC users w/ 512MB RAM get this error? None. Not even in.....(gasp) Windows Me. Also, video/graphics cards in PCs are far ahead of Macs. (GeForce Ti series, what?) :) My DV and firewire cards outperform my roomies brand-new G4. Also, the G4 runs on a 133MHz front-side bus and as any techie will tell you...front-side bus is where the power's at. The new P4's run on a 533MHz FSB. Mac gurus can shout, "RISK processor, RISK processor" all they want but deep down inside they don't wanna boot my P4 and their G4 up side-by-side. As far as OS is concerned, has everyone forgot that Apple forgot to package Cd-burner or DVD-rom drivers w/ their first relase of OS X. Also, Classic mode is crap. I hate the fact that Apple has become worse for drivers and support than Windows was. Sure, you can run anything but you have revert to "classic mode" which sucks and never runs my scanning/digital imaging right. So, in conclusion...give me that $3200 and I'll take my Dell Poweredge server with uber amounts of RAM and dual Xeon processors or maybe the new 3.06P4's. :)

Hmm...lets see, dual 1Gprocessors, 512mb of ram, DVD/CD burners, and woah, drivers. Not to mention I can run illustrator, pagemaker, photoshop, Quark, and listen to my mp3 collection while watching Initial D. If you can't run your scanning/imaging, chances are, it's your scanner or related software. You can hype P4's all you want, but do a little research on how Intel designs new chips. you'll be surprised and a little disgusted. As far as video cards for PC/MAC, gamers= PC, game DESIGNERS=MAC. parts swapping, goes like this, pull the tab on the side of a G4, the side unlatches, computer opens up, and everything you need to access is right there. Swap away.

That is why you get LINUX89% of the Software is free, Not shareware, FreeI wish adobe would make some software for Linux. It would probaly be worthwhile buying

Hey Ryno you got your Mac for the right reasons, they should stop crapping on you.

RYNO,

As far as your reasons for purchasing a Mac, to each his own. I think that if a Mac is what you wanted more power to you. I just get frustrated when people talk about Macs as design computers when everyone knows that back in 1986 Steve Jobs sold his soul to get this journalism kids to love his stuff. But I do not diminish the Macintosh system. Some people really do like it and I DO like what they do with there motherboards. It's just not worth the price when something better can be had on the PC market for less than half the price. Plus I stand by my story on performance.

By the way, I'm writing this on my dual XP 2200+ machine. (I agree, AMD rocks!!!)

Just to set the record strait, I really didn't start this as a mac vs pc thread. But to give credit where it's due, yes, you're all right. Macs are expensive. But right now I'm surrounded by four of them, and their giving me mean looks, so in their defense, let me say this, Having been in and around the printing business since before I could wipe my own rectum, I can tell you in complete confidence that 9.9 out of 10 Graphic artists/designers are using macs, and have been all along. As far as the whole journalism thing, having done paste-up, layout, pre-press and post production (all on the same machine) take my word for it. printing a paper and creatine an advertising campaign are so closely related their kids would be retarded. BUT, none of this changes one very aannoying thing... MACs are pricey.

I'm sorry Ryno. I may have accidentally (or not :)) started the PC v. Mac arugment or at least perpetuated it. Nevertheless, go firewall as opposed to anti-virus on your new computer. It's easier to guarantee that the viruses will not come in than it is to guarantee some program will find them all.

Who said anything about a mouse button, it's an optical mouse, there are no buttons. You click the WHOLE thing. Wait, I just realized... you have a mouse button?

yeah man go get yourself a router.. they work alright.. but somtimes they are a ***** cuz they will block a port u need open.. no biggi tho just go in to the config and open the port.. now for grafx design.. this lady that was in my channel (IRC) is a grafx designer, and she makes 3D designs for games and TV ads and such.. she uses a mac.. but that is for 3d artwork.. any news paper printing place will have almost all macs (if i remember right) so i guess the point here is.. 3d = PC ad designes and paper work = macs.. and games = PS2 :)

sorry to kick the dead horse, but I'm trying to hook up my MAC to my bro's router so we can share his cable connection. Anyone know of how we can do this? I've contacted my cable provider, and they have no idea.

Oh, I've had my Mac for over 6 years, an ancient G3. Anyways, how often have you PC users re-formatted your cpu in the past 6 years? More than, 20 times in most cases. Me, once! Damn stable machine, great for graphics, and colors NEVER display the same on a PC as they do on my MAC, without tweaking of course.

PC's are good for a whole lot, MACs are also great for Music producers and video editing as well, not only graphics, which I have been doing for the last 7 years.

sorry, I get really defensive with my MAC.

networking help PLEASE!!!!

Ok you need to download a copy of PCMacLan and install it on your PC. Then you use that software and Appletalk on your Mac to connect. Just select Ethernet under Appletalk and you're good to go.

By the way, not saying a word about Mac v. PC. PC users will always like their computers and Mac users will always be happy with theirs. Nuff said.

Nick

P.S. Hey, 100th post.
