last year in 2006 I had my transmission replaced from a nissan dealership because it was grinding when \i put it in gear... they said my syncros where all screwed up so it was cheaper to just get a new transmission... at the same time \i got them to put in a new clutch...so after all said and done 4000 bucks later my was supposed to be fixed... well a week later I noticed a sound when \i shift from second to thrid... like a whinning sound... it only happened once or twice a week but \i thought \i would go back to nissan and get it checked out.... so \i went to nissan and they heard the sound once.. but refused to do anything about it becuase it only happened once for them.... so \i was told if the noice gets more fequintly to tell... well it never did until this past twto months... \i went in to them last week becuase \i found that my xterra would grind from first to second only when \i would drive the truck for a long time....so first thing in the morning \i would drive the truck and it shifts all good... like butter..... but after say driving on the high way for like 2 hours and then stopping at a traffic light \i would gear down and prepare to stop... onced stopped \i would stick the truck in neutral and wait until green light... as the light turns green \i would push back in the clutch andit would grind into first gear... like \i said though this onyl happens after \\\i would drive for a long peroid of time... in the mornings this doesnt happen when the egine is cold , it only happens when the truck is really hot after the high way... and this happens at every light \i go toooo..... nissan drained the transmission out for me and said it was cystal clear... so they told me there is nothing wrong and that \i should shift slower... \i laughed becuase \i had standard cars and trucks since \i was 16 years old and never had a problem shifting... anyway if someone can help me the find out this problem \i would really apprecieate it... thank you... you can email me at [email protected] \i am very new to this site... \i jsut came across this site as \i was looking for a solution for my transmission probelmmm...

Welcome to NICO trucks fellow Canuck. I know Nissan 5 speeds in the Xetrra were noisy but not like that.

I do have one question and there is some relevance because I did this on 2 different Nissan trucks and I broke the transmission both times. Tore out the syncros actually.

Have you even down shifted from a high gear to a low gear but the revs of the engine were really high and at the same time as the down shift you hit the brakes? The vehicle will stop very fast and usually the rear tires will lock up.

This particular combination of events can cause bearing damage and syncro damage.

I do know there is a particular brand of gear of oil, which the name escapes me right now, that is supposed to be used with Nissan Xterra/Frontier 5 speed transmission's. Desert Rat and NM50 know which one it is. We had one other fellow in here with transmission grinding noises. He had his fluid changed and the problem went away. I'll have to find the string.

Not so much a particular kind of gear oil as it is a particlular grade. GL-4 is all that should ever be used in a Nissan manual. Never use standard GL5 gear oil, or anything that says they replace all GL grades. It has to specifically be GL4.

Even better is the Castrol GL4 full synthetic. You can get this at your local Dodge dealer - ask for NV4500 gear oil. It takes about 5.5 quarts to overfill the transmission a bit on my 4 banger truck and probabl about the same for yours.

I assume with the new trans, you got a warranty. I'd keep taking it back and get the better business bureau involved if you can't get satisfaction. It definitely sounds like you're having bearng or synchro issues.

Try bleeding the hydraulic release part of the clutch release system if the gear oil change doesn't work.
