The only thing that comes to my mind without actually hearing it is an exhaust leak. Can you smell exhaust fumes? Have you bottomed out on anything really bad lately?

Do you mean low as in quiet or low as in low pitched? I was thinking the latter.

Is it RPM dependent? For example is it always there (even just barely) but it gets louder and maybe faster/closer together as you lay into the gas?

Left a wrench under the hood? Most of us have done that at least once. I think I've done it like 3 times myself.

I actually found a bluetooth headset on top of the motor of a motorcycle I recently purchased. THAT was random...

Does it sound like marbles hitting a coffee can? That's detonation for you. Check your timing and/or use higher octane fuel.
