I've had a hyundai sonata for over 4 years now.my sister drove it for 3, and i've driven it since due to her joining the army.

never had a single problem until tuesday night.

i was driving, shifted to 2nd (sequential shift) and the rpms jumped from 0-2500 and power was cutting in and out... shifted to 3rd and rpms were normal. got into 4th, rpms started bouncing and power was gone.

thought it might have been a bad battery connection so i disconnected, let ecu reset, reconnected, made it home ok without the issues...

drove it wednesday night and it was ok, no issues.

this morning, drove to school fine. as im heading home, in 4th, it shuts off again. pulled over, tried to start it but it just cranked...let it sit for a minute, tried, turned on, then quickly died.

let it sit again, turned on, idle was ok, then shut off.

had my moms friend (who we got the car from, was restored by him and he did a damn good job too) look at it, it started and idled fine. then shut off.did this a few times.we figured it was low on gas (above the line but the light was on. weird though because i, as well as my sister, have driven the car just fine UNDER the line. shouldnt do that, i know).

made it to a gas station, put 1/4 a tank in, idled fine, drove home fine.

then tonight, i went to pick my gf up at work, and it died at an inersection. sat through a light trying to start it and it just cranked.it finally started, then died in the middle of the intersection.pulled over, started, got to her work then shut it off. started again just fine but now the CEL is on...

MY OPINION...i believe the car was running on contaminated gas, or bad gas in general.

on tuesday, the day it started having issues, i filled up 1/4 tank with QUIKTRIP gas. only gas i could find close, and it was cheap so i was like "chyeahhh".

The day i use something other than shell, chevron, and the gas on the air force base here, this s*** happens.

ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUE AS TO WHAT THE SOURCE OF THESE ISSUES COULD BE??(sorry for the caps, im just aggravated by the situation)my '40 runs ok, need to bleed the clutch, but ima have drive it until we figure out whats wrong with my hyundai and fix it.i gotta avoid cops though, im in the system for my windshield (cracked) and im already broke so it'll be a week or so before i can get a new one (hopefully my dad will help me out so i can get one sooner)

please help guyss!i need advice and opinions!!

-Sean

Fuel pump, filter, or pressure regulator would be my first guess. Test fuel pressure. If you know what to look for, test voltage at the pump.

Just need a fuel pressure tester. Auto parts stores will have them. Some cars have a test port on an underhood fuel line somewhere, others you need to tap into a line somewhere. Test after the filter but before the rail.

ok, thank you.we will prolly change the filter, seeing as how they're not too expensive.one less thing to worry about later on.

It really sounds like a bad pump to me, or a bad ground on one at least.

Did you smell any fuel smells around the car when trying to start it at that intersection?

Electronic ignition module inside the distributor?(usually put in place of a set of points)

I had a similar issue in an old car of mine.Replaced the elec ign module, and everything was perfect.

(It could look like one of these)

Just another thing to look at as a possible fault.

well, my mom and i had it towed to a shop that she's gone to before and one that her friend that helped us is good friends with.

they checked the codes (im guessing) and told me that it was the crank position sensor.

should have it back on monday (they are closed on the weekends)
