Is this on upshifts, downshifts, or both?

If upshifts, you may not be getting a full disengagement of the clutch, and thus be grinding the gears a little.

If downshifts, try rev matching better, your syncros may be overworked.

If both, I again lean towards a syncro issue.

Does it happen more on hard shifts?

Figure out the pattern to when it happens and we'll go from there.

i spoke to a tech at nissan he said the grinding noise when i press down my clutch means i need a new clutch. he said to replace it would cost me between $800-$900. does that sound right or am i getting screwed? please help me out.

In your other thread you said the grinding isn't until you actually change gears with the shifter, rather than when you depress the clutch.

Did the tech actually listen to this happen or did you just say "I push in my clutch and it grinds, what's wrong with my car?"

I ask because grinding just when you push in the clutch not only isn't normal, it doesn't make much sense. Specifically, if you're clutch was dying, you'd more than likely have slipping when accelerating, which wouldn't be a grind. I can't think of a situation where the clutch itself would make a grinding noise except possibly something having to do with the pressure plate/throwout bearing mechanism.

How many miles are on your car? Unless you've done a heck of a lot of driving and/or are very bad with the shifting, you shouldn't need a new clutch on an '05 yet.

Oh, and $800 from Nissan doesn't sound any more like getting screwed than any other dealership service. A private shop would probably do it for less.

In other words, when the transmission is cool or cold. That's not abnormal in any car. Shift slowly and lightly when the transmission is cold/has been sitting awhile. If you want to minimize the cold grind, change the transmission fluid to something designed to help this issue.

ok if its sounds better for u in the morning when istart my car and then press the clutch to put it in 1st gear, as soon as i press down on the clutch without touching the shifter it makes a loud grinding noise. and this morning i found if i dont push it all the way down there is no noise at all and i can put the car in gear. my car has 22,000 miles on it, mostly long distance driving on the highway to go out of state.

It'd be nice if you'd put this in your other threads, maybe you accidently hit new topic instead of reply.

Anyway, given your mileage, there's no way your clutch itself is gone. It sounds like some component of the clutch/transmission mechanical linkage is an issue. Take this to a dealer and have them repeat the problem. I assume you're still under warranty, so this should be fixed for free.

Check engine when low on gas? Weird.

Anyway, clutches should not go out in 22k, so yes, Nissan owes you a clutch if that somehow is the issue. No matter what it is, they owe you the work, 22k is still well within the drivetrain warranty.

My apologies, I didn't come by the Sentra forum last night after that last post.

I don't know Nissan's warranty policy off hand. Check your manual and maybe post up in the Technical forum and ask NISTECH, he would know.

Honestly, it would be a terrible idea to have only a 12,000mi warranty on the clutch. That doesn't inspire confidence in Nissan's vehicles.

What I can say is that, again, I don't think your clutch disc itself is worn out. I think it's in the mechanical linkage between your foot and the flywheel. In that case, it's a drivetrain warranty issue (which is at least 30,000mi if I remember correctly), rather than a clutch warranty issue. If they try to tell you that it's a clutch issue regardless, make a lot of noise and be irritating for awhile until they just give up on being jerks and pay for it. This is NOT your fault, assuming you don't race or generally beat on the car, and this car is too young to have problems like this.

The drivetrain warranty on any new sentra is 5yr/50k miles, which ever comes first. The clutch would be covered under the drivetrain warranty, so whatever stealership you went to is trying to rip you a new one.

I'm going to merge all your threads together that consist of the same topic. In the future stick to one thread if you plan to discuss the same topic.
