I've never heard of anything like that in my life. but I guess the solution is to drive with your headlights on, LOL.

wow that is weird, I'd suspect some sort of ground issue from the ignition sircuit, I suspect it's somehow shorted by the light circuit, might be easier to find a donor car and swap the dash/chassis harness

yeah welltahts the problem when trying to fix intermitant problems, if it won't stay broke you can't diagnose ti to fix it, which is shy I'd say pull the harnesses and swap in new/used ones, had a guy in out local club unwrapped his whole harness and visually inspected every wire and fixed all the problems, now has a good working harness, of course in the S30 chassis there are a lot! less wires

does it have a single ignition coil or multiple? Anyway, I'd check the + wire for the coil(s) for voltage with the headlights on and headlights off. If it loses juice when the lights are off, you need to just find a good power wire that comes on with ignition switch and hook it to that. I had a problem in my jerry-rigged '89 camaro where the engine would lose power when I had the windshield wipers going. Turns out the wire I used to power my fuel pump would lose power whenever the wipers would move.

How is the idle? The Z31 is supposed to have an idle up sensor that detects when a load is drawn (lights, AC, etc). The car should idle at about 800 rpms with nothing on and 1100 rpms with something drawing a load.
