I bought a car off Craigslist. So I smogged and done all the legal paperworks to get my car running till after 3 weeks I can't seem to put it in gear. I just did my maintenance and I even put new clutch fluid. What's my problem if the clutch pedal is just stuck all the way down and doesn't seem to go back up. Is it cos my clutch is burnt? What should I do. And what possible parts do I need its a 1990 240sx hatch. Idk if it needs a clutch or flywheel idk. Help me out pls guys. Thanks.

OK rather than just jump to conclusions like your clutch and/or flywheel is toast why don't you start simple? any leaks? have you replaced the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder? I would start there as it will most likely be cheaper and you don't have to drop the transmission... :poke:

Thanks man. Yeah there's no leaks cos my dad is a mechanic and he just did my maintenance and so far when he checked there weren't any leaks. We just don't know the problem. No I haven't change the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder. If you mean slave cylinder you mean bleeding it out right?

did you bleed it properly? because if the pedal is going right to the floor and not coming back up, you probably have air in the system somewhere.

No actually I haven't bleed the cylinder yet. I just wanted to know if its the clutch since the car starts perfectly just when I try and put it in gear the clutch is stuck all way down and won't go back up and stuck on 1st.

You need to study up on how your clutch works guy....

If your dad is a mechanic he will know ask him.

It is defenitely not your clutch,at best its air in the lines, bad slave, or bad master....
At worse it is a bent clutch fork (this happened to me) or messed up pivot point (both are poorly made nissan parts)

i'm going for one of the former not the latter, Unless you have been clutch kicking the piss out of your car then the latter is more likely

like Tstep said, start simple.
bleed the slave cylinder first. theres a few write ups on here. its a 2 person job, but fairly simple and should only take 5-10 minutes.
it should fix the problem. let us know.
also, if you still have the clutch damper box, i would highly suggest removing it. makes life much easier and gives you a much better pedal feel

Sounds like your clutch slave cylinder. If the pedal stays down after you push it in thats most likely what it would be...

You need to bleed your clutch pedal. Simple as that. If you bleed the clutch pedal and it still doesn't work then get back to us.

sbird1 wrote:Find a helper. There is a bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. Have you or a buddy open the valve, then the other pushes the clutch in. Tighten the valve, release the clutch pedal. Repeat until all you get is fluid coming out with no air. The easiest way to do this is to find a piece of tubing that fits snugly around the valve so you can see the physical air bubbles in the tube. So: Open valve, push pedal. Close valve, release pedal. Repeat. Don't forget to add more fluid to the reservoir if you get low.

Thank you so much for the info. I will get to it when I get off later. What fluid does it need?

Thanks to all of you that replied to my post. My laptop is down and I'm using my HTC EVO so I was wondering if you guys can post the link of how to bleed the cylinder for me as a reply. That would be a great help.

It's most likely your SLAVE cylinder. Replace that first. It's the cheapest.

It could also be the hose connecting the slave cylinder to the transmission. That was the case with me...

Had the exact same problem a couple of days ago. Clutch pedal stuck on the floor , would not return.
I replaced the master cylinder first because I saw it "wet" with fluid on the boot that goes through the firewall but the problem didn't get corrected until I replaced the slave cylinder.
I guess replacing a master-slave set at 130K isn't all that bad :)
