The problem is the starter went out on my beemer. Well that's not actually the problem per say, the problem is as I am trying to remove the starter from the transmission bell housing where it is located in this car, the damn thing wont budge. I have the two securing screws and nuts removed and the chiltons say's just pull it from the bell housing, tilt da dada da. etc. I can't get the thing to disconnect from the bell housing. I can't get in there good enuf to smack it with a hammer, not that I really want to do that either but I need to have it so I can rebuild it. Any suggestions would be great.Sorry Wes I don't know were else to go for quality help on this issue.

can you get a pipe or bar of some sort in there to give it some light taps? I've only had a 635csi and 540i bmw, but I think it's true that your 318 only has those two bolts holding the starter. If some light taps doesn't do it, I dunno what to say.

The starter gear might be tightly meshed with the fly-wheel. Put at least one bolt back in and reconnect the wires. Have someone bang on the starter with a metal object such as a hammer or lug tool while attempting to start the car. The starter should turn and hopefully free up from it's frozen position.

Put two flat-head screwdrivers between starter and bell housings to see if you pry off.
